If we can’t be fast, we can be good at jobs: our 12 press awards

La Mesa Patch won a dozen awards at last night’s San Diego Press Club awards banquet. Very proud of my year-old site. (See story here.) But my wife, Chris, kicked my butt in first-place awards. She won three for her photos. I won none. (I got six second-place certificates and a pair of third-places.) In all, Patch won 18 awards in the county, compared with 24 for the Big Gorilla, aka The San Diego Union-Tribune. My biggest award was third place for overall news site. I finished behind the San Diego Daily Transcript site and the U-T site, called SignOnSanDiego.com (my former employer).

W55 wife Chris with three of the four photo awards she won at SD Press Club.

    Dear Ken and Chris,
Your awards are well deserved! You work tirelessly at your jobs and at the track meets you volunteer to shoot. Your blog and photo posts have kept the track and field community throughout the world linked together. Your hard work and dedication is very appreciated. The shot Chris took at the swim meet of all the feet sticking out of the water is a one of a kind incredible photo. Keep up the good work!

Way to go team. . .anyone who can write and figure out the digital cameras of today deserves high praise and a vacation in Brazil! Speaking of which Ken, that will probably be the next time I get to see you, and this time I hope you bring your wife along for the extravaganza. As far as time away from the track, which I guess for us is the definition of a vacation. . .I am not sure I’m ready for a long trip up the Amazon. I have traveled the headwaters of the Amazon, the Napo River. However, it was so dangerous that I think the Brazilian vacation needs to have the ocean and the beach as the backdrop rather than the jungle and the mighty river. It should be some place calm and peaceful where you could take an expensive camera without ruining it camping out in the rain in a hammock. Chris will have it all figured out.
Best to both of you and thank you Ken for all that you do for masters track & field. The best award that you have going is the number of fans you have who read your blog daily and through it try to make sense of the world of master’s athletics.
