It’s hip to do hep: Two dozen men, 4 women compete at nationals
Multi-events maven Jeff Watry — aka decamouse — has posted results from last weekend’s USATF National Masters Indoor Heptathlon Championships at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. See the men’s results here. He’s also posted uncorrected women’s results. (Still need to fix some vault scores.) Two dozen men entered (but not all finished) from the age of 36 (Jefferson Souza of Miami) to 77 (Bill Jankovich of Racine, Wisconsin). Notable men’s winners included Canadian guest John Hawkins, a 1972 Olympian who cleared 1.60 (5-3) at age 61, and David Ashford, a world-record hurdler, who did the 60 highs in 8.87 at age 47. Four women competed, including masters Kay Glynn, Christel Donley and W45 Lori Schutt.

For Lori W45 I get a different 1000;
pole 2.07 > 2.51 > 385 points
1000m 3:13.53 > 2:58.01 > 972 points
total 4373
For Kay W55:
pole 2.60 > 3.60 > 803 points
1000m 3:46.48 > 3:06.10 > 881 points
total 5674
For Christel W75:
60h 14.75 > 9.95 > 721 points
1000m 4:59.39 > 2:48.86 > 1080 points
total 5102
Women ran 800 not 1000 — 2010 age factors do not list 1000 for women — all ref in multi is to 800
Christel ran 9.94 not 9.95
PV conversion is correct – I need to manual change the score since Hytec does not have the AF in at this time
PS: That was a flight for men running the 1000
We really did have a well organized and smoothly run heptathlon and appreciated our excellent starter/official. In reference to the women’s competition, it was amazing to have Christel back in a great competing mode after all the surgeries she’s been through and equally nice to have a new competitor from the Chicago area. Forty-five-yr.-old Lori not only has talent, but she understands the “fun factor” of the masters track and field program! She’s definitely hooked! John Hawkins’ daughter, Julie, was also a pleasure to have in the competition, and we enjoyed converting Canadian “things” to American “things”!
The men had their own fun, and Emil and Kelly offered some new hurdle techniques! (Kelly still thinks he did the right thing by backing up and taking another run at the hurdle!) The men had some close scores, and they had a couple new recruits, too! Giving credit to Iowa, newbie to the hep., Merek Wensel enjoyed a good score and gold medal in his age division!
The hep. started on Saturday about 6 pm and finished up slightly before midnight. We were at it again by 9:30 am Sunday (regional meet started at 8 am) and were handing out awards by 2.
A good time was had by all, and we enjoyed all of Jeff’s periodic announcing of football updates along with our track announcements!
Note…The men run the 1000 and the women run the 800 in this indoor hep. And the women will await their official scores.
Kay Glynn
O, I made a mess. Under the picture wrongly stood ‘800’ and I hypercorrected my response… But the points are okay.
Thanks Weia (what is your e-mail?) somehow I have never met you (youngster and top Highjumper) how could I miss you? and then Dutch… I met “Dutch”
Warmerdam, years ago in Fresno. Will have to mee his son.
The “enthusiastic” runners in the photo are waiting for the 1000 m, the “wonderful” finish of the Hep.
Kay, what a great report. I am adding our respect and more than that, our BIGGEST THANK YOU to Jeff
Watry. What a trooper. Year after year, he makes us feel like family, realxed and yet very competitive.
His organisation – while he is competing – is just superb.
And the reward was, the Packers won. Everytime Jeff went to the bathroom, the Packers scored….
And yes, it was great to see newcomers, like Dave Ashford, who tried a “Kamikaze” approach to the pole vault, then realised (with my prodding…) to take a bit slower run (hard to do with his speed) He was so happy and showed it. It was fun and exciting to watch him, hoping, he would not sail over the whole pit!!! the helmet was a great idea.
Alltogether, it was a meet to remember with good feelings.Driving back to Chicago, and the Bears winning. It was something for everybody – unless you are a Bronco fan, (sorry Jerry)
Julia(watching you grow(up) welcome Lori, and all the best to Kay, stay healthy
Chritel
Congrats David Ashford on your first multi-event-that should set you up nicely for the season.
Sorry about the bad caption, Jeff. I’ve fixed distance from 800 to 1000. But it probably felt like the 10,000! Thanks for all your incredible hard work on this event. (And kudos on your marks!)
I was making less mess than I thought. According to my tabes for multi events women had to run 1000, just as the men do. This was proposed years ago when the outdoor decathlon for women was proposed too. I even have special factors for calculating points – but nowadays IAAf nowhere speaks about an indoor heptathlon for women! I asked IAAF about the details and will let you know.
Hi Christel,
Nice to be called ‘youngster’! Maybe I have you seen when high jumping in San Sebastian Worlds 2005 or Riccione Worlds 2007 as I always try to see all high jumping, but it could be that I was doing my own warm up at that moment or I was waiting in the call room. I am only now and then at Worlds, Gateshead 1999 and indoor Sindelfingen 2004 the only other two I attended.
In Riccione my javelin throw was just after yours, in that cute track facility in San Giovanni in Marignano…
My mail address can be found on http://home.xmsnet.nl/weiatletiek/MultEvent.html
Off topic: the picture of San Giovanni in Marignano on Google Earth is the day of our competition!! You can see spectators around the hammer cage!!
Sounds like it was a great meet.
Always amazed that here in NYC we have almost no Masters events, especially given the size of the metropolitan area. And we have the great track at the Armory that could be used.
I and a couple of other Masters compete in Opens, but otherwise NYC Masters have to travel long distances to find strictly Masters events.
Maybe I should get off my butt and find others in the area who want to stage Masters events and get Christel and other talented organizers to show us how it’s done.
sorry I MISSED IT THIS YEAR AFTER 4 YEARS of being in this hept championship i could not make it this year good job to all that ran, threw and jumped.

Dave, this is too funny ….. I did not think of giving you a WARNING, not a tip – how to avoid stiffness, happens to the best of us!!
All those muscles, that you normally don’t use,
“talk back to you”
Go ahead and complain – and stretch. Next time: it might happen again. ”
