Ivar Söderlind of Eurovets posts latest records at odds with WMA

Ivar and Sandy still differ on world records.

Ivar Söderlind, statistician for European masters track, has posted the latest set of Eurovets age-group records. (See them here.) As usual, the world records among them don’t always match the records on the WMA records site kept by Sandy Pashkin, even though World Masters Athletics updated its lists October 24 — less than a week ago. Two examples: WMA says the W40 outdoor vault world record is 4.04 meters by Doris Auer of Austria on a meet date of “10.05.71.” (Don’t ask.) But Ivar says Doris jumped 4.11 (13-5 3/4) on August 6, 2011. WMA says the W50 world record for 200 is 25.65 by Marie Lande Mathieu. But Ivar lists a 24.33 by Merlene Ottey on July 18, 2011. I’m afraid to compare other records. I’ve done that before and got sick to my stomach.

That 4.11 pole vault seems to be 4.10 according to the results. I’ve reported it to Ivar.
Have a look at the W85 records of Nina Naumenko. Her 5000 for example is more than 4 minutes faster than the old record. On the other hand six minutes slower than her own world record of six years ago in San Sebastian. I’ve seen her running overthere, a class on her own.

    hello,
    I m Maryvonne Icarre ,
    on january 9th 2011, i ran the 200m indoor in 25s44.
I m 46 ;so it’s the new world record on the distance. My federation sent me the file for the homologation.Nearly one year later no news!!! still, it is recorded as the new French record and I saw it mentionned as the new world record on Italian and german sites. But …no news from the WMA.

    There is no problem.

A record is only a world record if it has been ratified by WMA and is published as such on the WMA site http://www.world-masters-athletics.org/records

Better results than existing WMA world records are therefore pending world records and should be marked as such.

Reporting of unratified results as world records by non-WMA sources is the problem.

Anyway, because of the sheer volume of masters athletics results, it would be surprising if there were not erors, lags and inconsistencies in the formal WMA world record list. Just point out any errors – to WMA Records – and let them get on with it.

Well, as long as we are expanding the discussion a bit I will add my 2 cents.

On March 6, 2011, three world records were set in the 200 dash at indoor masters nationals (Albuquerque, New Mexico). The WMA record list has been updated four times since then, but only one of the three records was added:

Bill Collins (M60), had his record ratified and listed on the WMA site in the same month as the meet (Bill ran 24.32).

Joy Upshaw (W50, and pictured in the post above), ran 26.24. Her record has never been added to the WMA list.

Barbara Jordan (W75) ran 36.80 in Albuquerque. As in Joy’s case, her record was never added to the list.

To sum up: All three sprinters established world marks on March 6, 2011. One (Bill C.) got his world mark accepted and listed in the same month, while the other two (Joy U. and Barbara J.) never got theirs accepted or listed. One wonders why there was a difference.

As far as Maryvonne Icarre (France) above, one has to wonder why her record could be accepted as a national mark and yet not be recognized for world status.

We are going around the problem…
    the will of doing something.
    The passion of doing something.
    The knowledge of doing something.

Re Maryvonne Icarre: I meant that if the French authorities were satisfied, why not WMA? Given how fast the WMA records are updated, shouldn’t Maryvonne’s mark from January be up by now?

A US mark, as noted, got up there in well under a month.

Maryvonne. Could you e-mail WMA’s Sandy Pashkin, ask what has happened to your pending WR and come back to Ken Stone here with the WMA response?

  8. maryvonne icarre - November 1, 2011

@Anthony.I ve just emailed her…I ll give you her answer as soon as I get it.Thanks

  9. Anthony Treacher - November 2, 2011

@Maryvonne. I trust WMA’s Sandy Pashkin has sent you immediate confirmation that she has received your e-mail query and that that she will notify you of the result within max. one month (in your specific case preferably max. two weeks).

    I can’t believe it

2 emails 7 days and my record is at last on the list .
    Thanks thanks thanks

@Maryvonne. Good. I really do hope your world record has been processed and ratified. But it is not yet on the official WMA list of world records. Did they tell you when we will see it?

That raises another question, the periodicity of WMA publishing of world records. I suggest WMA strictly implement and announce an update of official world records on a quarterly basis, say:
31 December, 31 March, 30 June, 30 September. Then the athlete knows roughly when to expect his/her world record to appear. It is uncertainty and lack of communication by our sports bodies that causes problems for everyone.

  12. peter taylor - November 14, 2011

Congratulations to Maryvonne. No, I did not see the mark on the WMA list.

I do know that the WMA list as shown on the Internet has been updated four times since the end of February 2011, which is not a bad pace, but I agree with Anthony T. that a systematic updating of records (every 3 months) would be nice.

In terms of U.S. marks, it’s a shame that Joy Upshaw’s 26.24 (W50) and Barbara Jordan’s 36.80 (W75) never made the world list for the 200. They were achieved at a rather important meet, our US indoor masters championships in Albuquerque this past March.

Actually it is the Chairman of the WMA Records Committee who would benefit most from fixing the publication dates of WMA world records. She cannot respond to everthing immediately and we should not expect her to. She has the classical administrative problem of how to avoid being governed by random incoming transactions. And there are no more unpredictable random incoming transactions than athletes setting world records.

If the Chairman of the WMA Records Committee herself takes the initiative by fixing the publication dates of WMA world records it will “get that monkey off her back” as they say in Corporate-Speak.

Then she can relax and get on with the rest of it.

    Hi
It is not yet on the WMA list but it is on the EVAA list as European Record and WMA record…at least I know it is not lost somewhere…
    thanks

    You can be proud Maryvonne.

But that EVAA document just confirms Ken’s original report 17 days ago of inconsistency between EVAA and WMA reporting of world records.

Your WR should be a Pending WR on the EVAA list. Then there would be no problem. Why on earth don’t people listen to the obvious?
