Jeff ‘Decamouse’ Watry leaves Gill, returns to Wisconsin roots

Jeff tested poles at Gill factory.

Jeff Watry, a national-class masters decathlete and jumper, is perhaps better known as a multi-event meet director and force behind the decamouse website. But he’s also a world-class engineer who has worked for Gill Athletics in Illinois since the mid-1990s. He helped design and test wind gauges (like the one featured here from the 2008 Trials) plus javelins, poles and other track equipment. Now he’s leaving Gill — returning to his home state of Wisconsin. So his well-known email address at Gill will be left behind as well. His new address is jpwatry@hotmail.com. Despite his departure, Jeff says: “I will still be competing and, if things work out well, coordinating multis.” Best of luck to Jeff and Jeannie, now closer to the grandkids and their fellow Cheeseheads.

Jeff and Gill not synonymous anymore?! Disappointing for us Jeff/Gill fans. I was hoping he’d stay with Gill long enough to invent the first “foldable” pole! I’m sure he’ll keep busy–he’s not the kind of person who “sits” well!

What a friend he has been to Masters athletes. If you ever helped Jeff unload his car at a Masters combined event, you know how dependant we are to him. Poles, implements, crossbars, wind gauges, meet software, hurdles, not to mention a world class athlete and world class guy. Jeff I hope this gives you more time with your family and I look forward to seeing you on the track.

Jeff is a miracle worker when it comes to administering AND competing combined-events at the same time. The meets are always well-run and Jeff always finds time to interact with everyone, (and beat my butt in the final running event!). I’ve enjoyed our close competitions and look forward to many more in the future. Best of luck in the move and I second Bill Murray’s wish for your spending more time with family. See you in Joplin.

I have been trying to get information concerning the USA Masters Decathlon Championships June 22-23 in Charlotte N C. I am unable to get the info when I went to jpwatry@hotmail.com as it is stated in the Oct 2012 National Masters News. Since Jeff has left Gill does he have another address so I can contact him and get entered in the event. I would appreciate info on how to get connected with him. Thanks……John Place
