John Hinton goes sub-4 again in 1500 at Duke Invite

John Hinton, competing against collegians, ran the 1500 in 3:57.98 Friday at the Duke Asics Invitational in Durham, North Carolina. He represented Carrboro Athletics Club, whose Jason Jabaut, ran the fastest time (3:48.96). John turns 46 on May 1 and should eventually challenge his own M45 world record of 3:56.39, set at Durham in 2007. The listed M45 world record for the mile is 4:16.75 by New Zealand’s David Sirl in 1987. The AR is 4:18.83 by Ken Sparks in 1990. Go get ’em, John! Thanks, Alan Sigmon, for sharing the latest Hinton news.

    Hey John,
Hope all is well with you & yours.
I’m happy to see you’re running so well. Keep it up, and stay healthy.
    Hope to see you soon.

John, you make me look bad as an announcer. I tell the crowd that the race in which you’re running will be very competitive, and then you just run away and hide. You refuse to come back to the field, no matter how fast your pace. Wow.
Interestingly, John (and Ken Stone), the American M45 outdoor record for 1500 is 4:00.53 by Ken Sparks. John’s time indeed was accepted as a world record, but the USATF Web site indicates it was never accepted as an American record (it is listed as pending).

    John,
Just as smooth as ever! Keep tearing it up. Hope to run in to you again soon.

Tony, John will be racing the Invitational Mile at Drake, why don’t you join him once again. I’m sure one of you would get the Mile record!

John is not only a hellavu miler (1500 runner), but he’s one of the true gentlemen of our sport!
As for the US record, John submitted his paperwork after the 2007 annual meeting, so he won’t get it ratified until this year. But Sandy has said it’s all good, so expect the record to be officially John’s before the year is out (though possibly a bit faster than his pending mark)! … unless, of course, Tony revs it up and puts up a mark of his own!

John’s 800 record at a HS meet was smashed by three kids:

The article does not due justice to the Dogwood Classic High School 800m race.
Brandon McGorty (Jr.) led at the break followed by Alex Lomang and Drew Hunter. McGorty went through the 400m at a blistering 51 something. He had a significant lead down the last homestretch, but both Hunter and Lomang closed rapidly in what appeared to be near photo finish with all three under 1:49:

    McGorty 1:48.58
    Hunter 1:48.64
    Lomang 1:48.68
