John Ward masters meet dodges bullet, will return April 11
Santa Ana College women’s track coach Miriam Mitzell shares good news: Her school’s spring masters meet is returning April 11. Why is this news? Santa Ana College (south of Los Angeles) dropped its men’s track program, and the meet had been a fund-raiser for that team. Whew! But this informational flyer calls the meet the John Ward Games. That’s an eye-opener, too, since the meet has been called the Al Siddons Games the past couple years. (Al Siddons is the school’s former track coach.) Whatever it’s called, the meet offers masters an early reality check on their fitness. The bad news: The meet is held the same day as the Carlsbad 5000 road race. So if you’re a distance runner, the choice is tough.
