Joy Upshaw downs a Phil Raschker USA record: W50 300 hurdles

It might not count for record consideration, but let the world know that a long hurdle mark by Joy Upshaw is among the best in history. At the Pride Meet in San Francisco on Aug. 13, Joy ran the 300 hurdles in 46.38 seconds, demolishing the listed U.S. W50 record of 49.20 set at 1997 Durban (South Africa) worlds. (See results here.) Owner of that 14-year-old record was Phil Raschker, who would go on to set a W55 record of 49.14! (The W50 WR is 45.05 by Christine Müller.) Sadly, the Pride meet isn’t listed on the USATF events calendar, hence it’s probably not sanctioned. In any case, Joy had a great weekend, running the 100 in 13.05 into a wind and a 26.51 deuce. She also long-jumped 4.90 meters (16-1). Nice work, Joy!

Joy had such a great time at Sacto worlds, she's keeping the season going.

Who better than our friend Joy deserves to be the best master of the year in women and I hope that is winning in Monte Carlo in November, a spectacular athlete and solar power as she is a commercial for the World Masters.
    GREAT JOY

Congratulations to Joy, who has had a fabulous year. According to the meet Web site, the Pride Meet is sanctioned by USATF. Of course, some people think that that is some definitive statement on quality. It is not; it means that the organizers decided to get a sanction by filling out a form and sending in a check.

Regardless, I hope that everything was done the right way and that Joy will get her record. I recall that in March Joy set a world indoor mark in a USATF sanctioned meet by running 26.24 in the 200. That meet was in Albuquerque, our national indoors.

After three revisions of the world marks since Albuquerque, Joy still does not have the listed mark, which, ironically enough, is held by Phil Raschker with a slower time. Hope for better on Joy’s 300 hurdles.

Let’s put Joy in the Masters Hall of Fame (or did I miss something)? I announced her in Greensboro (indoor nationals) in 1996, and that was 15 years ago. She was tearing things up then and, as Roger Pierce indicates above, in 2011 she “is one of the most formidable competitors in Masters track!!!”

I vote for Joy to be put in the Hall immediately.

Any meet can be posted on the USATF calendar, sanctioned or not. Someone just has to do it.

  13. Ken Stone - August 18, 2011

USATF calendar also denotes sanctioned meets with a dot. It’s a helpful way of checking status. But why wouldn’t a sanctioned meet be on the calendar? Seems that should be part of the fee paid.

    ..Thanks everyone! 🙂
It has been a good year of training/racing… That’s the great thing about our Masters Track..we can be down one year (injuries, moving, life stuff, etc) & up the next (better training, focused, settled, etc).. and we have more years! Yay! Love our age group stuff! You all have been good examples/people in our sport:-) See you on a track soon!

    Nice Joy!!!
In the end, when all is said and done, Joy’s name will be plastered all over the record books. As an athlete, she’s just too technically sound to be denied – period.

Joy has God speed, and it is a joy to know her and to behold her in motion.
