Kathy Bergen, Thad Wilson make ‘Age’ issue of ESPN Magazine
At least Kathy Bergen and Thad Wilson of Southern California didn’t have to pose nude. That’s how Phil Raschker graced an inside page of the ESPN magazine two years ago, which we noted. Also shown (in some editions) are Magdalena Kuehne and M90 multi-eventer Julian Myers. But sprinter/jumper Kathy at 72 and hurdler Thad at 61 are far from the oldest athletes pictured. Those would be 92-year-old volleyballer Mickey Pitti and 93-year-old swimmer Hoi Pang. But good for ESPN to feature our stars when Track & Field News still ignores us.

Kathy and Thad, world-record holders and champions, are among those featured in Oct. 1 issue of ESPN magazine.

Sent this story off to Navy’s Chief of Navy Information (CHINFO) folks and told them they need to run a similar story on FCCM(SW) Thaddeus Bernard Wilson, USN (Ret.) post Navy accomplishments!

What do Kathy Bergen, Thad Wilson, and Bob Lida have in common?
Answer: They’re all so good that the records they set look like mistakes when you read them. Last year in Berea, Thad ran 14.37 for a distance of 100 meters in the M60 group. Not great, you say? Wait a second; he did that in the 100 hurdles, not in the 100 dash. Stunning.
At Bloomington this past winter, Kathy Bergen scorched the 200 meters in 31.86 FAT. Pretty decent, yes, for the W55 group? In fact, that time would have taken second in W55. But Kathy did it in W70! Yikes. She was 72, for crying out loud.
Hope that Thad, Kathy, and Bob Lida will all make it to the indoor championships in Landover, Maryland, in March (Bob has already indicated that he will be there).
Awesome!
Thad, congrats on such deserved recognition!–Bill
Congradulations Thad. I hope to get back to hurdling some day so you can pull me to new PR’s or push you to the next WR.
Congrats Thad and Kathy…impressive recognition for impressive accomplishments! Stay healthy and keep on showing the world that like a fine wine aging can be a “good thing”!
