Let the worlds begin! And best wishes from Dr. Stephen Peters

With opening ceremonies last night and the first day of hep and dec today, Sacramento worlds has begun. Results are being posted at all four venues. See the overview here. Dr. Stephen Peters, the British sprint star at worlds for decades, won’t be in them, sadly. He writes to share his well wishes for his recuperating friend Bill Collins and detail his own setback. Steve writes: “Please could you pass on my well wishes to Bill Collins as I don’t have any contact for him and I have just heard about his illness. I am only glad to hear that he is now on the road to recovery. It must have been distressing for him, not only to be ill, but also to miss a home games where I am sure he would have stunned the crowds and set new world records. Hopefully he will be back in action again next

year and get his records then.” I’m on the road today. Updates to come!

Bill Collins and Stephen Peters have been friends and rivals for decades.

Dr. Peters, team shrink for the British Olympic cycling team, continued:

I wish all those who are going to the World Championships the best of luck, sadly I wont be able to go. Back in 2008 I developed an inflammatory condition affecting my joints and tendons. It meant i couldn’t compete that year and have had flare ups of the condition ever since. With treatment and remission I get windows of opportunity to get fit and compete. The condition flared again about eight weeks ago and I am unable to run through the pain. Very disappointing as training was going well and I was really looking forward to coming over to Sacramento and seeing everyone.

Enjoy the games and take care.

I am following the M60 decathlon and already some results are either incorrect or there is a U.S. M60 decathlete who runs a 14.79 100 but can long jump over 20 feet in the deca. I have got to see the hops on this guy. He received 1200 plus points in the LJ.

What is the correct date? Is there something I’m missing? All three schedules are on the very same event front page. Now, let’s say I’m a javelin thrower but have no reasonable expectations to advance out of the qualifying rounds. I have the original schedule, scheduled my trip to throw on Saturday, fly back home on Sunday to be at work on Monday. Only to find out that I should not have relied on the first schedule on the web page, there is another schedule after all. Monday it is (might be, who knows, I’m no longer there) and I’m back in the office, having truly enjoyed my lost weekend in Sacto. And having to live with this disturbing dreams where I torture faceless schedulers with the sharp end of my jav. See ya all in Sacto.

I see the results for the M60 deca man have been revised. His 6.17 was actually a 4.17 LJ. Seems right.

Really sad to hear about my good friend Stephen Peters, I want to wish him the very best during his recovery. I also looked forward to seeing him at the worlds. I just got home from the hospital yesterday, and I am on the road to recovery, as for a full recovery, that time I can’t say at this point. I want to thank everyone that sent emails, made calls, placed those very kinds words of well wishes on the blog for my speedy recovery. I want to wish everyone competing at the worlds the very best to each of you. I will be there in spirit.
