MacLeod, Bellaire and Henderson also speedy this weekend
Mt. SAC was great, but it wasn’t the only major meet to feature masters. Up at Hayward Field, masters ran the 100 and 800 at the UCLA-Oregon dual meet Saturday. Results are posted here. Perhaps the top mark was an 800 in 3:46.68 by Suzi MacLeod, not far off the listed W75 American record  3:37.19 by Pearl Mehl in 1989. Here is video of the masters 100. And here is video of the masters 800.  And out in Chester, Pennsylvania, at least two masters posted great marks over the weekend at the Widener Invitational.  Dr. Cheryl Bellaire, 50, lowered her season best in the 800 to 2:34.71, and national champ Renee Henderson, 44, blasted the 100 in 12.59 and deuce in 25.58.

Renee Henderson National and World Champion.
I hope everyone realizes that all of the sprinters who finished behind Renee are CURRENT collegians. Renee is in W40; how can she can beat tracksters who are still going to college? The only explanation I can come up with is that Renee is very, very good at what she does.
Wait, before I hit “submit,” I notice that one runner listed is from “Juventus.” Is that a college or university? Never heard of it. Well, I will just say that virtually everyone Renee beat is a current collegian.
Sometimes we get our best times running against collegians and finishing in the middle of the the heat. Having people to run with all around your seed time is great…I don’t care if they are thirty years younger….and we set a good example to them to keep on running.
I’d like to mention a Masters THROWER who shocked spectators and a few competitors at a University meet in this endless sea of running blogs that are posted. Milton Girouard, 45-49, competed at the University of Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Co. on the 11th of April and took 3rd place in finals at that meet (15.20m ). The winner was Eric Flores from Black Hills State University who at one point in his young throwing career had the longest USA H.S. shot put throw in 2006 of 67′ 4.5″. Second place finisher, Ryan Shelton was the 2008 Alaska 4A State H.S. Championships runner-up in both the shot put and discus. Mr. Girouard beat 4th place finisher, Senior from University of Northern Colorado, Patrick Berg who was the 2005 Colorado 3A State H.S. Champion and record holder in both shot put and discus. 11.75 inches was all the distance that seperated first through fourth place. Way to go big guy!
