Magdalene Kuehne claims W80 American record in the triple jump

Results of the Southern California Striders Meet of Champions at Cerritos College are now posted here. And besides the amazing 4:24 world record 1500 by Nolan Shaheed, we also note the American record W80 triple jump of 5.68 meters (18-7 1/2) by Striders member Magdalene Kuehne, who also won the 100, long jump, discus and shot. The listed W80 record was 5.12 (16-9Вѕ) by Johnnye Valien in 2005. Other notable marks April 30 were the 11.62/23.61/51.73 triple by M50 Mike Sullivan and the 12.03 by M55 Damien Leake. In the hurdles, Thad Wilson marked himself as an M60 favorite at worlds with 100/300 marks of 15.52 and 46.53. And Olympic Trials veteran Clare Look-Jaeger cleared 1.60 meters (5-3) in the high jump at age 44.

Thad Wilson leads Steve Cummings in the 100-meter hurdles at Striders.

Sensational performance by Michael Sullivan in M50; at first I thought there had been an error. Let’s take a look:

    100 dash 11.62 excellent
    200 dash 23.61 excellent
    400 dash 51.73 wow!!!*

Fred Sowerby set the American record way back in 1999 when he ran 51.39. Of course, since then we did have ……….from Douglas Kalembo. Regardless, congratulations to Mike.

There was no wind gauge set up when Magdalena jumped the 5.68. We scrambled the facilities crew and got one set up for the remainder of the competition. She jumped 5.63 (steel tape measured, witnessed by three officials) into a -1.4 wind on her fifth jump. That is the distance that has already been submitted for the record.

Nolan was amazing and very cool as usual. The entire So Cal Track Club, put in some solid performances at the Striders meet and I am glad that I am now associated with such a supportive and dedicated group of athletes. Mike Sullivan was very impressive. I was a distant third in the 400 meters heat with Mike in an amazing time and Johnny Speed coming in second with a solid 52.97. I must say that Mike Sullivan is, as in the words of Mark Cleary “The Real Deal”. Congrats on your good early season form Mike and I hope that you run even faster as the season progresses.

Congratulations to Mike Sullivan – it’s been a pleasure watching you prepare for this opportunity. Ken, may I suggest a story idea for you: anomalies and/or interesting things in the rankings this year. I was thinking of Mike Sullivan, who has the leading M50 times for the 100, 200 and 400 this year thus far, but then I saw something that boggled the mind and may never be seen again. hint: check out the 18th and 19th names on the M55 200 meter list.
