Masters 3000 at Trials could produce a raft of records
Today is the deadline for entering the final major masters exhibition races of the season — at the U.S. Olympic Trials. On second thought, forget it. The fields in the men’s 3000 and women’s 200 are already stacked. You don’t stand a chance. The headliners in the 3K are the current M45 American record holder, Pete Magill, and a guy who just broke the M45 world record in the mile, Tony Young. The Holy Grail is the listed M45 WR of 8:27.7 held by Nigel Gates of Britain.
Pete’s pending American record in the 3000 is 8:36.86 from this past March. But wouldn’t you know it — a week ago at the 40th Annual Club Northwest Summer All Comers Series Meet 2 at in Shoreline, Washington, Tony ran a hand-timed 8:36.0!
Tony nonchalantly posted this on the letsrun.com message board: “Felt relaxed and smooth throughout. Nice even splits. Want to try one more 3k to get ready for Oly Trials race to get the bugs out.”
These results were sent to me:

Of course, not all the women will race. But we’re pretty much assured a full (and packed) field.
The men’s 3K is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3. The women’s 200 is set for 12:35 p.m. Saturday, July 5 — immediately after the men’s open 200 quarterfinals!
(And my race is set for Wednesday, July 2, at the adult all-comers meet on the Trials’ second rest day. I’ll be lucky to run my sprints faster than the men in the 3000.)

HEY where is Sorenson?
8:03.69 I don’t recall hearing about the Masters record being broken last year by Toni Bernardo on May 26th.
Nigel’s record is approaching 10 years. Time for it to fall, so who is the rabbit? This record will need even pacing and a bit of a kick. 8:27 is about a 9:02-3 2 mile
Will this be televised?
Good luck
I have so many friends in the ladies 200 meters that I don’t know who to root for; which means I’ll be pulling for everyone. Go ladies, GO!!
For the record, I won’t be running in this race. While it would be a great honor to represent American masters track, I’m afraid my legs need a rest. I’ve been racing hard since late January, after only a brief respite following hard racing in the fall. And the time has come to heal. But I’ll be rooting on the others from my perch on the couch. And I’ll especially be rooting for Tony to take down the M45 WR – hey, it’ll give me something to shoot for next year! 😉
New to this blog. Very interesting information. Do you know if the U.S. Olympic Trials masters events will be televised?
