Masters vaulter Boyce stars in wild-and-crazy YouTube clips

Don’t do this at home. This YouTube video making the rounds shows a vaulter named Andrew Boyce, 44, fetching an errant Frisbee at his home in Illinois. It was posted in August, about a month after Oshkosh nationals, where he went 1.90 (6-2 3/4) and 4.10 (13-5 1/4) in the M40 high jump and vault, and 6.31 (20-8 1/2) in the long jump. So he’s serious. His kids obviously are part of this production for the residuals. But after watching it a half-dozen times, I still can’t figure out where the pole was planted. Andrew is promoting his Web site, defiantpictures.com. His other jumping-related video shows him careening over a car.

That is awesome! Now add some high jumping, a funny skit and some hot santas helpers.. What was the most difficult part about jumping in the suit? Your form looks great!

Thanks Kemp, I will take suggestions. Looking for additional ideas. Things / people / objects to jump over or on. I have two others in the works right now that include both high jumping and pole vaulting.

Masters vaulters to be showcased at 100th Drake Relays

Who says only sprinters and middle-distance types can represent masters in major outdoor meets?  A bunch of world-class geezervaulters (some in their 60s) will compete in a masters exhibition event at the 100th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Doug “Bubba” Sparks made the announcement on Becca Gillespy’s site.  Bubba, who won M55 silver at Spokane, wrote: “After six months of back and forth with inside help and influence, the (Drake Relays) committee has approved the event and final field for a Masters Vault at the 100th Drake Relays. The vault is planned for 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. The field includes Gary Hunter, Paul Babits, John Altendorf, Trevor Richards, Jeff Kingstad, Bill Halverson, Bubba Sparks, Don Curry, Joe Johnston and a few others we are trying to confirm. This will be the first major masters vault competition in a major meet.”

Good story, and this should be a wonderful event to watch. A minor correction — this will not be “the first major masters vault competition in a major meet.” For years, Penn Relays had a masters vault, and it included (among others) Phil Raschker, Phil Mulkey, Rex Harvey, Tom Rauscher, Jerry Donley, Joe Johnston, Gerry Counihan, etc., etc.

Thanks for the correction Peter. Totally forgot about that, as did the organizers. Bubba

Masters vaulters gather, powered by Becca

Becca Gillespy won’t be eligible to jump in masters meets until about 2020. But she already has keen masters vision. As webmaster and founder of Pole Vault Power, making a run at Vault World for top-dog status, she’s added a masters forum to her set of pole vault bulletin boards.
