McCrossen’s reality: Las Vegas meet ended his season

“T.R.A.C.K. Live!” may not live this one down. Its opening meet in Las Vegas — an attempt to showcase masters track in a reality game show setting — did no favors for M40 sprinter Tim McCrossen of Cincinnati. He’s feeling a little embarrassed by the fact he’s done for the year because he let meet directors goad him into running without a warmup. Tim wrote me: “I went to run the meet because of the hot weather (Midwest has been horrible for meets with weather) and have relatives that live there, so it wasn’t a big expense.” But it cost him dearly. Read on.

Tim continued:

I flew in late Friday and missed the “pre-interviews.” Anyhow, the 100 meters was supposed to go at 4 p.m. Saturday, so I decided to show up at 1 to register, and as I’m registering I am told: “The women are racing now, you are up next.” So (I) had to jog to the start line, throw my racing tights and shoes on and set blocks and go. Third step in, I believe . . . I tore the plantar fascia in my left foot! I decided to finish the race, took second in my heat (in) 11.53. Ugh.
A 32-year-old guy in the Marines ran 10.67 and that was the fastest of the meet for the 100. . . . I am severely disappointed as it took me almost two years to finally get back into track shape, and now it looks like I have to shut it down for the year. UGH!
I am not mad at the people of tracklive.tv. They were very nice. But (there was) no communication for people like myself that came in late Friday night who couldn’t attend the meeting/interview to know of the time change.
I thought showing up 3 hours prior to race time would be plenty. Anyhow I have enough experience to know that I shouldn’t have run a race without a step of warmup. . . . But I think I’m pretty much done for the season, which is extremely disappointing as I was feeling I could “run track” again!

It’s possible Tim’s injury isn’t as serious as he thinks. But he’s a chiropractor and knows a little about the body. He’ll have an MRI on the foot to confirm his diagnosis. I’m hoping it’s just soft-tissue damage that can heal with a few weeks’ rest.
In any case, what a bummer! Hope he’s back sooner than later.

I just have to comment that I wasn’t “goaded” by meet directors, I showed up to sign in to race and registration people said “the women are racing the 100 now you guys are next.” So went to the start line and got my stuff on and raced. My own fault to know that I shouldn’t race without a warmup. I just wish I knew of the schedule change since I travelled all that way to race and with weather delays friday in midwest airports I didn’t get into Vegas til 11pm. Live and Learn. TM

Tim, I hope you have a speedy recovery and pull off a miracle healing for Nationals. I absolutely hate this for you, espcially with the progress you’ve made this year.

Hey Tim it was really nice meeting you in vegas, and I also want to thank Ken Stone, for allowing us a stage to place our names and times up too.Its so cool to put a face to the names we see through out the year. you know Tim we do what we do for the love of the sport, because last year at “pennrelays” I tore, and rupture my right adductor to a 2nd degree strain. weather conditions vary from state to state but, Phoenix we only have one temp. and that is Hot! (smile).I pray for health and quick recovery for you at godspeed! see you at Nationals.

    Hey Tim McCrossen,
It was nice to finely meet you in Vegas–sorry for your pains. Unfortunately this is one reason why we were asking athletes to come early; heat times were changed by the meet directors and officials based on the number of confirmed athletes. Please keep in touch, you are still a part of our roster, where we can still highlight your career and athletic talents.
    Sincerely,
    Julia Dudley Najieb

    Tim-
YOU are a CLASS ACT & a talented athlete! This is exactly what I beleive the entire T.R.A.C.K TV experience is all about as I research it & become involved. I hope ALL MASTERS TRACK ATHLETES in the US will realize the OPPORTUNITY that has been presented to us by Julia & the CORE Group at T.R.A.C.K. TV and “get on board”.
ABSOLUTELY. there WILL/HAVE BEEN/ & WILL BE problems associated with every new venture. BUT, any “new” entity will go thru “growing pains”.
It’s TOUGH for me as a coach to read about a quality athlete such as yourself having a “bad break” at such a crucial time. Where YOU RISE TO THE SURFACE above most is in accepting the situation & looking forward to the next opportunity. (after all — – I’m from PHOENIX!!)
JULIA – LET THE GUY COMPETE!!!
I work in sports therapy & am also a coach in this program (Courtney – another STUD SPRINTER from our area knows me) – LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU NEED! I have orthopedics, PT’s & massage Therapists avilable to help YOU! In knowing Courtney & my experinces as an athlete; HE WANTS TO RACE AGAINST THE BEST!!!
    We want you there!
Let’s all MOVE FORWARD t promote this unique & dedicated effort to promote the sport!! For season two – I want MORE FOR MORE ATHLETES and the SPORT.
MORE flexibility of scheduling (it’s tough to give up 4 – 8 weeks of time to train in a set location) MORE events – (5,000m & 10,000m + a 3,000m Racewalk) – we need MORE PEOPLE.
Speak to local USATF Associations + Local Fox TV Affiliates to cover local athletes while they train FOR THE BIG ONE at home.
    GET INVOLVED!!
    THIS CAN BE VERY SPECIAL!!!

I am curious to know if anyone that competed in Las Vegas for this T.R.A.C.K. tv have received any travel and hotel accommodations.
