Michelsohn adds 5000 WR to her collection this year

Results of the Pride open meet in San Francisco have journeyed our way, and they include confirmation of a huge W65 world record in the 5000 by Marie-Louise Michelsohn, visiting from her home in New York State. Her time of 20:27.08 — an amazing 6:35 mile pace — bettered the listed world age-group record of 20:42.4 by Australia’s Theresia Baird last March in Melbourne. It was her seventh world record this season (by my count.) And according to the Age-Graded Tables, it’s roughly equivalent to an open mark of 14:15.27.

The listed W65 American record is 22:41.8 by Jaclyn Caselli in 1986. (Jaclyn’s mark also was bettered by Margie Stoll, who ran 21:24.32 in May.)
According to Outsport’s Chuck Martin:

(Marie-Louise’s) record did not come without a glitch. The 5K, the first scheduled event of the meet, was delayed by nearly 30 minutes because the inner rail along the track surface had not been installed. The oversight turned into triumph as dozens of members of the San Francisco track team joined with volunteers to get the rails quickly out of storage, sorted, and installed.

Besides Marie-Louise’s great mark, several other masters excelled at the Pride meet at San Francisco State University, which was held July 7:
M45 Bruce McBarnette high-jumped 1.87 (6-1 1/2), and M45 Paul Sinatra cleared 4.80 (15-9) in the vault. M40 triple jumper Adarian Barr spanned 12.99 (42-7 1/2).
Here’s a report on the Pride meet, an outgrowth of the Gay Games.
