Michelsohn adds to legend with W65 mile world record

Marie-Louise Michelsohn of Stony Brook, New York, shares details of her latest world record, her sixth of the year — the W65 outdoor mile at Saturday’s Bob Boal meet (where results are now posted.) at Duke University. (I reported Jeanne Daprano’s W70 mile record there earlier.) Marie-Louise writes: “My time was 6:16.28. The old world record was Diane Palmason’s 6:19.04 run on April 6, 2003. The old American record was Jeanne Daprano’s 6:32.47 run on May 4, 2002. Incidentally, Jeanne’s 2002 mile was run at the same meet — the Southeastern Masters. I love that meet. I’ve done it several times and always enjoy it.”

Marie-Louise, whose new mile record is equivalent to an open mile of 4:16.28 (on the Age-Graded Tables), continues:

In fact, the first time I ran in that meet was the meet in which Jeanne made that 65W record. I ran the 3000m, the mile and the steeplechase. (The 3000m and the Steeple were American W60 records). Interestingly, the 3000m, which was my first race of the meet — so my target race – was 12:06.65. I was 3 seconds faster indoors in Boston at the nationals this year.
There are some good days and some not so good days. And I had really been working on that 3000m in 2002 — I had run 12:08.6 at the Potomac Valley meet 2 weeks before (which had also been an AR).
Another aside: A lot of people think I started competing in 1999 when I started doing track. But I competed on the road before that. I started in 1995. I did, among other races that year, the Shelter Island 10K, which is a big USATF race here. And in 1996, 1997 and 1998 I competed in the USATF MAC Assn Grand Prix and Championship Series of road races. I still have the standings for those years. It is interesting to see the progression. Those races were really fun. They were all around the NY metropolitan area.

It was a thrill to compete with legends Marie-Louise, Jeanne Daprano and Leslie Chaplin-Swann in my debut masters mile at Duke. They are all so inspiring and beautiful runners to watch. Way to go, women!!
And it was a fantastic meet. I highly recommend it to other masters.

What an incredible compliment Robin, I am flattered to be included in such talented company.
Jeanne and Marie-Louise are indeed a joy to watch run and they are both such an inspiration to me.
Robin, welcome to “masters track” You ran a great race on Saturday and when my abs grow up, they want to be just like yours!
My thanks to Max, Don and countless others for another great meet. This was my third year at this meet and it is always so well organized.
As always, my friend Peter Taylor did an incredible job announcing.
