File this under: M40 indoor records you won’t see on the books

Mike Godbout, one of the surprise newcomers at Lahti worlds, didn’t know any better when he ran the 42-inch hurdles a year ago at Iowa State University. It was just an innocent collegiate indoor meet, an NCAA qualifier for the kids. But Mike, who at 40 was racing cats half his age, clocked 8.18 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Uh oh. That beat the listed M40 American record of 8.22 — for the 39-inch hurdles. (See results here.) In an email exchange, I told Mike that even  if he could somehow gather all the requisite signatures and phototimer shots, he still might not qualify for the AR. Dang hurdles were too high! On the other hand, Darren Scott of the UK will never see his latest mark on the record books. That’s because nobody keeps age-group records for the 300-meter dash.

On March 7, Darren ran the 3 in 34.95 indoors.

After I learned about this from the Track & Field News message board, I wrote him for details. He replied:

My plan was to run a 300m at Sports City Manchester as my last indoor run. In December I ran a 300m at Sports City in 36.03, which was a British best performance. . . . I had only been training once a week for 5 weeks, and I knew I could run a lot quicker when fully fit and running fast again.

So I said to my coach (Morris Condon) I will have another go on my last run at Manchester on my birthday. So I ran 7.06 for 60m as a warmup, then did the 300m in 34.95 — which is also my all-time indoor PB. It was 34.98 in 2004, as not run very often.

So all in all I have done six British records and two world records this indoor season. So been a fantastic indoor: 60m 6.98, 200m 21.71, 300m 34.95 and 400m 49.35. Back into training, and so much look forward to the outdoors. At present I am ranked number one in UK and maybe in the world for all my indoor performances as a M40.

Also just FYI. Here are results from Mike’s race of March 2009:

Great pictures, Ken. The Frenchman has it right wearing “my” bandanna to keep the sweat out of his eyes. Another reason why I wear a bandanna is because of the girls. I tell folks who ask, “By the time chicks find out my age, they’ve already fallen for me.”

Up in the M55 age group, Rich Burns has set a fabulous American outdoor record in the 1500 — 4:17.8. And the season is young!
