National Senior Games aggressively marketing its 2011 meet

The National Senior Games must really be hurting. They sent me this note today: “Congratulations on qualifying for the 2011 Summer National Senior Games presented by Humana! Online Registration is NOW OPEN for the Games which will be held in Houston, Texas June 16-30, 2011. You will also be receiving a registration packet in the mail. This packet will include forms you may use to register. However, please note there is an additional fee to register with these paper forms.” I qualified for the 100 and 200 by running (slowly) at last summer’s California Senior Games in Pasadena. If they want me for National Senior Olympics, they must be desperate. But the bigger issue is: Who will win—Sacramento worlds, Cleveland nationals or Houston? Few will hit all three.

Arizona's David Hockersmith is the NSGA poster senior. Hope he's cashing in.

I am not going to Houston – too hot and too humid for track for me. And doing all 3 is pretty crazy expensive.

I guess, Ken, that the question is who will win in terms of attendance. Having predicted on March 10, 2010, in an e-mail to John McCasey that his total for the Sacramento meet would be 1475, I feel I have some credibility (final total was 14 hundred something — I never got an exact figure).

All right — track and field portion of Senior Games: 4275.

    Worlds in Sacramento: 5480.

Nationals in Berea, Ohio (I don’t say Cleveland because if you go to Cleveland and ask where Baldwin-Wallace College is [that’s our meet site] they will tell you to get back in your car and drive to Berea): 902.

    Mary,
Sorry you can’t make Houston/I was hoping to meet
you. But,you are right,it will be hot and humid unless a hurricane shows up.I was there this week-
end for Texas State games and the weather was just
great. But,I lived in this monstrous heat all my
    life.

Way to go Pete. I have competed in every National Senior Games since I started competing. The competition is a good as Masters Nationals if not better.

I am planning to go to the National Senior Games in Houston. I’ve competed in track in Texas before, so I know what I’m getting into, and since I’m a javelin thrower the heat isn’t a big concern like it might be for a distance runner. The Sacramento worlds are also going to be a destination for me… only three hours from my house, can’t pass that up! But Cleveland? Might not be going to the Cleveland nationals.

I got that same email from NSG and just qualified last Sunday here in Houston. I’m doing all three. Houston is my home, Cleveland is my wife’s home, and Sacramento Worlds goes without saying.

Well, since we gripe about USATF not caring much about the masters contingent isn’t it kind of nice to be “aggressively” marketed too?

All three meets will be too expensive for me also, but I’ll decide when I see more about them. I always get better competition at NSG, so that will probably be my first choice.

    “aggressively” marketed TO, sorry!

  9. Kim Williams - October 29, 2010

AND, gosh, I don’t mean BETTER competition, I mean MORE competition. Yikes.

I might have more competition at the NSG – but they stop too short for me – with the 1500. At the USATF Masters I can run the 5k on the track and at the WMA – 8k x-c as well as 5k, 1500 etc. If I were a field event person and/or a jumper – I might like the NSG better but for a middle distance track runner – NSG does not offer me much.
NSG will be very aggressive in its marketing – including lowering the entry qualifications and extending the deadline – or that has been the practice the past number of years when I have paid attention to that meet.

I HAVE A QUESTION, WHERE IN HOUSTON WILL THE GAMES BE HELD? I WON ABOUT 5 MEDELS GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZ.
I SPECIALIZE IN PING PONG, PICKLEBALL, AND SHUFFLE BALL, WHAT DAYS WILL THOSE GAMES TAKE EFFECT. I LIVE IN NYC BUT I WILL BE AWAY FROM 6/13 TO 6/17 I HAVE RELATIVES IN HOUSTON THAT I MAY STAY WITH TO SAVE ON THE HOTEL FEE, SO IF YOU COULD TELL ME THE DATES OF THE ABOVE EVENTS ONLY, I COULD THEN PLAN MY SCHEDULE. THANKYOU, BARBARA A. TUCKER

If do not have several of the track and field events in my state. They don’t answer the emails or phone calls at any level to get answers.
