Nolan Shaheed WR for 800 meters crashes the 2:10 barrier at 61

Few men over 60 can run a 400 in 62 seconds. None has ever done it after running a lap in 67 seconds. But that’s what Nolan Shaheed did yesterday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, when he went straight to the back of the pack in the first lap of the masters men’s 800 but stormed back to a final time of 2:09.02. He thus became the oldest man to run sub-2:10 for 800 meters. He’s 61 (and turns 62 in mid-July). A little after 6 p.m., with temps in the 80s, Nolan crashed that barrier by beating the listed M60 WR of 2:10.42 by Australia’s Alan Bradford in 1999. He said he’s running Achilles’ pain-free for the first time in three years. It showed. With meet announcer Bill Fitzpatrick noting the record attempt as it happened, Nolan delivered big time for his second record of the young outdoor season (after an AR in the 1500). Here’s video of Nolan’s amazing race, with wonderful race call:

Masters records could fall again soon.

Willie Gault is aiming for the M50 world records at 100 and 200 today in Los Angeles. Can’t confirm the meet. He stated this matter-of-factly while watching Mt. SAC from the press box. He didn’t run at the Relays this year. (He’s run relays with HSI elites and entered open 200s in the past.)

The listed WRs are 10.95 by Bill Collins and 22.53 by Everad Samuels.

Much else to report from Mt. San Antonio College. But I have to save that for later. Please excuse my out-of-order and duplicative photo gallery. (Can you spot the 1960s Olympians?)

Videos of all races are being archived at RunnerSpace.com, BTW.

Nolan crosses finish line in 2:09.02 for an incredible WR in the M60 800.

For now, savor these masters results (including a few masters women running with collegians Friday night):

Absolutely sensational performance by Nolan Shaheed. Makes you want to sing. And how about that 12.79 in the 100 by W50 superstar Joy Upshaw? Yowza. Derek Pye was really flying in the 110 hurdles with 14.46; maybe he can compete some more for Long Beach State.

BTW, Aeron Arlin-Genet again broke the listed American W40 standard in the 1500, this time by running 4:32.09.

  2. Roger Pierce - April 17, 2011

Nolan and Joy you are incredible!!!

  3. Duncan Greenshields - April 17, 2011

What a fantastic result from a truly great athlete and person. Congratulations Nolan … you’re on fire!

  4. Jason Purcell - April 17, 2011

Willie Gault is listed as running in the Men’s Open 100m, section 5, in this years Mt. Sac Relays. Time 11.31.

i knew you could do it…thanks for staying a step behind me. you are truly an inspiration!!

  7. Cornell - April 17, 2011

Nolan, you are simply AMAZING and a true inspiration to many of us.

  8. decamp2000 - April 17, 2011

Great job Nolan! Great to see you are running pain free! Many more record efforts to come.

  9. Thad Wilson - April 17, 2011

My congratulations to Nolan. Another fine race by a fine gentleman.
On another note, the results of Event 504 Men 50-99 100 Meter Dash Age 50+ Masters race are wrong. It lists me as finishing 5th with a time of 12.91. I was at home (some 90 miles away) working on my wife’s computer at the time of the race. I had submitted an entry and planned on running, but my work schedule prevented me from preparing for the race.
    Is there another Thaddeus Wilson?
Was this just an administrative error?
Is there someone out there that was at the race that can shed some light on this? Thanks.

    Thad Wilson (The real one)

    Awesome run Nolan!

  11. Doug Thompson - April 17, 2011

I was wondering when the 800 world record would fall, Nolan. This could be only the first with worlds in your home state. Congratulations!

  12. Derek Pye - April 17, 2011

Congratulations Nolan! Wow…yet another superhuman performance from a super human being!I’m still in awe everytime I see you. Thanks for being so great inside and out.

  13. Tom Hartshorne - April 17, 2011

Having been a witness to the world record that Alan Bradford set at Gateshead in the M60 800 meter final at the worlds (three men broke the world record that day – 3rd place finisher was Sid Howard in 2:12+ for American record) I figured it would not be broken in my lifetime (mind you I plan to gracefully follow Sid and Earl Fee up the ladder of improving my age-grade performance as I get older). But, in ’99 I was still getting to know Nolan. I would give Nolan casual advice like at the indoor nationals in Boston one year, suggesting he negative split in his 800 final – a reversal of his normal plan of going out very fast and holding on with the advantage of his long stride form. He looked at me wistfully, but I figured he’ll never follow that advice. But he did and he won even though it was his third race of the indoor nationals that year. Nolan’s record can be broken and soon. If Nolan goes out in 65 and comes back in 63 or 62 we will have another record. . .a 2:08 or 2:07.

  14. Horace Grant - April 17, 2011

Fantastic Nolan! I watched your race on flotrack. What a treat! And what an inspiration you are to fellow middle distance runners!!!

    Horace

Joy-Great race! Nice job to ALL of the masters runners/throwers! Thanks Richard, once again, for the opportunity. Hope to see everyone in Sacramento.

  16. Tony Plaster - April 17, 2011

I WAS looking forward to turning 60 this year…..
(still am there is no one I would rather go to the line with than Nolan Shaheed . The massive amount of energy and EXCITMENT that he brings into the race spreads to all of us.)

    Way to GO.

  17. Lance Elliott - April 17, 2011

Congrats, Nolan! The best part was being able to watch it live online. I agree with Tom H. Based on the extreme negative splits, in the right race, Nolan is ready to knock off even a few more seconds… Amazing!

  18. keith McQuitter - April 17, 2011

congrats to hats off, bent knee, your the man at 800

  19. Scott Bickham - April 17, 2011

Nolan – congrats on a fine race. You said you were feeling pretty good when we talked at Carlsbad, and you put your money where your mouth is. You have, are and will be an inspiration!

  20. Michael Daniels - April 17, 2011

With all the 60 somethings doing so well this year lets declare 60 the new 20. Keep them coming. Great job Nolan I’m pain free ths year for the first time also. Its a strange good feeling.

  21. Gary Patton - April 17, 2011

Incredible performance, Nolan. I was happy to turn 65 in December after coming in a poor 2nd a number of times last year. But I really enjoyed being in the same race with such a gentleman and athlete. Go after that 2:08!

  22. Mark Alexander - April 17, 2011

Way to go, Nolan. The video really shows you bearing down on the home stretch. Nice to see masters getting some attention in the announcing. I hope we’ll meet again someday on the track.

  23. Stefan Waltermann - April 18, 2011

The video was so darn slow on my computer that I got about 600 stills! No problem, this is the very best way to analyze Nolan’s running form, stride length and so on. Just incredible all the way. Congratulations to a wonderful run! How did you get over the Achilles’ problems that have been nagging you for so long???

  24. Reid Harter - April 18, 2011

    STUD………..

  25. JStone - April 18, 2011

Great runs by Nolan and all of the other masters that competed at Mt. SAC! Something tells me that Nolan would have run sub-2:09 if the race would have started with a 1-turn stagger.

  26. Steve Cummings - April 19, 2011

Nolan, I had the good pleasure of watching it live, as it happened. Congratulations on your new WR. You never cease to amaze me. You’re an inspiration to all. Keep it up.

And Joy, holy smoke! Thank God they didn’t put you in the M50+ heat because…well…some of us might have been a little embarrassed. Dang you’re fast.

  27. alastair dunlop - April 20, 2011

congratulations to Nolan . I took his 1500m indoor world record in 2009 (although I believe a Frenchman is soon to take it). I am looking forward to Sacramento and I am pleased Nolan is out of my class.I will enjoy watching him .

  28. Matt B. - April 23, 2011

    4/23
The Male Athlete of the Meet was 61-year-old Nolan Shaheed, who set a new Masters age group record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.56. He is the first person ever over the age of 60 to run faster than 2:10 in the 800.

Former NFL great Willie Gault ran faster than the current world records in both the 100 and 200 meters on Saturday, but those times will not count for records because of the wind. Gault ran a time of 10.90 in the 100 and 22.49 in the 200. Those would have been records in the men’s 50-and-over category.

  29. Will Miller - November 17, 2011

Nolan: You have been a proven winner in the entertainment industry. But when it comes to athletics, I am just now realizing how amazing you are! Congrats!
