Nolan Shaheed, M35 relay barely miss world records at Mt. SAC

Nolan Shaheed

According to tonight’s results from the Mt. San Antonio College Relays east of Los Angeles, the SoCal Track Club team of Brian Dameworth, Brian Sax, Brian McCaffrey and Alex Hastings just missed the listed M35 world record for the 4×800 relay. (Mt. SAC results are here.) They clocked 8:12.33, falling short of the listed WR of 8:11.84 by Spain in 2008. However, they smashed the listed American age-group record of 8:22.95 by Robert VanCleve, Brad Dittmar, Chris Yorges and Chad Newton at 2006 Charlotte nationals. (They also set an unofficial world record for most Brians on a relay team.) In other masters events, Nolan Shaheed fell tenths short of the M60 world record in the 800, clocking 2:10.78. (The listed WR is 2:10.42.) The race was won by chin-up champ Matt Bogdanowicz in 2:05.13. W45 Karen Steen of Club Northwest won the masters women’s 800 in 2:20.74. Karen had been shooting for the listed W45 American record of 2:18.72. Here’s a video of the 4×8 masters race:

But Nolan’s consolation prize: the American M60 record. He creamed the listed AR of 2:12.71 by Sid Howard at Gateshead worlds in 1999. But Nolan doesn’t like the paperwork hassle, so he’ll probably wait for nationals to go sub-2:10.

I ran the lead off in place of Jason Rhodes. What a close race between all three teams! an hour after the masters 800 I wish I could have run faster for them. I did hear that they broke the record ealier in the week possibly. Anyway Nolan is amazing as always! What a privledge to be in a race with him. I am not a front runner and lack pacing skills, went out too hard and I was pretty fatigued the last 150, maybe it was all that LA traffic I was sitting in! cool event though!

    Ken:
Worth noting that that a few miles at the road, Team Runners High set two American Records yesterday at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa,CA. Both came in the Men’s 55-59 age division:
    Dale Campbell 56 3,000 Steeplechase 10:39.56 – old record was 10:59.2 set in 1984.
Rich Burns 55 5,000 16:21.12 – old record was 16:27.1 set in 1981. This is Rich’s third American record this outdoor season.

Great job to all the athletes competed in Mt. Sac!
Ken, I believe one of the Brians of winning SoCal team is actually Terrance Spann (first leg) who ran an incredible 400m at Lahti Worlds last year. (Sorry if I’m wrong…)

Congratulations and great running Karen! Too bad you weren’t at indoor nationals this year to be part of the outstanding W45 800M with Zofia Wieciorkowska, Joan Hunter, and Canada’s Anne Bunting. Good luck with your season and record attempts.

Karen actually didn’t know that the W45 American record was 2:18 and change, but she does now 😉 Tania Fischer had a nice race and made it close down the homestretch. She’s having a great spring so far, and I’m sure we’ll hear more from her.

Can’t seem to find the Womens or men’s masters 800 video?

Speaking of records at Mt. SAC, Aeron Arlin-Genet ran 4:31.21 to break the listed W40 American mark in the 1500 of 4:32.73. However, Aeron has many other better marks in the 1500 as a W40 runner, and several other runners have better marks as well, and thus this particular race may not count for a great deal.

Terrance Spann did lead off for SoCal Track A team- Brian McCaffery is injured right now.Jon Colletti ran an excellent anchor leg for the SoCal Track B squad of 2:01 low–should be a great year lots of athletes are setting records early.By the way Ken, I did the paperwork for Nolan so he should get his record.

  11. NOLAN SHAHEED - April 19, 2010

Thanks for doing the paper work Mark.
You are a true friend because I know that it took almost TWO hours of running around to get everything signed, the FAT photo, and even permission to get onto the field and it STILL may not be ratified

Congratulations, Nolan, on your magnificent 800 at Mt. SAC. Having seen you run many times, I can’t say I’m surprised. You are one of the finest middle distance runners in the history of masters T&F, right up there with The Great Earl Fee and two or three others in the 41-year history of the program (or however long it has been).

Congratulations, also, to your noble “assistant” (Mark Cleary), who ran around almost 2 hours to get your paperwork done. Too bad that Mark won’t be around for this weekend’s Penn Relays. With 50-52 thousand fans expected for Saturday (Usain Bolt will be running), it would be nice to have Mark on hand to at least try to get some signatures and the FAT photo (if any records are broken).

  13. Jason Rhodes - April 21, 2010

Actually, the Men’s 35-39 record is much lower now than 8:11. I was on a team that broke the record at Colonial Relays earlier in April:

I was scheduled to run at Mt. Sac but was sick. Matt (first commenter) kindly took my place even though he had run an open 800 earlier.
