Jerome Millet, resume padder According to the list of entries for this weekend’s Mt. SAC Relays east of Los Angeles, one Jerome Millet is entered in the masters 110-meter hurdles — a race reserved for ages 40 to 50.  Jerome doesn’t turn 40 until May 27. He’s confirmed this to me. We’re clean: No drug positives at Riccione worlds

World Masters Athletics conducts drug tests of a few dozen athletes at its world championships, and the 2007 affair in Riccione was no exception. Lately, stories have circulated that American M40 hurdle champion David Ashford made a comical effort to avoid testing. But the official bottom line is that his test — and all other […]

Comedown for Roger Kingdom: DNF in match race

Oh well. The highly touted masters hurdle race between two-time Olympic gold medalist Roger Kingdom and M40 world champ David Ashford didn’t produce a race for the ages. Roger, who turns 45 in August, is listed as DNF — did not finish. Ashford, also 44, clocked 14.99 — over the 39-inch masters hurdles. But W40 […]

Brits ready to rip at Linz world indoor meet

Pete Mulholland, my Hero Du Jour, sends along results from the British masters indoor championships, completed this weekend in Cardiff, Wales. Nearly 20 British records were set, and four world records, meaning the Germans won’t have the Linz world meet all to themselves. And watch out for the Yanks (whose masters nationals won’t come until […]

French Olympian grabs share of indoor M40 hurdles record

Karl Smith of the United States, via Jamaica, is a legend of masters hurdling — the first under 14 seconds for the M40 highs. But he lost that record to David Ashford. Now he’s apparently sharing another — to a Frenchman. The Koops’ Web site reports that Vincent Clarico ran the 60-meter indoor hurdles in […]

Coach Cleary still has some explaining to do

In an earlier post, I wondered aloud why all the women in the upcoming exhibition 1500 masters race at Carson nationals had times that end in .00. Now Mark Cleary — organizer of the masters events at nationals — gives an explanation. They’re mostly converted marks. (He says he subtracted 20 seconds from mile times […]

Pssssst? Wanna run at the USATF Open nationals?

With no public fanfare, coordinator Mark Cleary has announced the events that will serve as masters exhibition races at the USATF nationals at Carson (near Los Angeles) in less than four weeks: a men’s 110 hurdles and a women’s 1500. Actually, it wasn’t so much announced as whispered — deep in the bowels of the […]

Kingdom coming back? The champ is serious

Roger Kingdom, the two-time Olympic high hurdles champ, has told a Pittsburgh newspaper that he’s shooting for Athens at age 41. He needs to run 13.55 to qualify for the Olympic Trials in Sacramento. The current world M40 record for the 42-inch hurdles is 14.16 by Spain’s Carlos Sala.
