Pete Magill’s site picks Fleetest Feet among masters for ’09

Pete Magill’s YLFOR site wraps up its boffo debut year with some courageous picks for its 2009 American Masters Awards. I’ve thought about doing this, but I’m way too lazy. Pete has energy to burn, though, so he came up with some great categories and choices, including masters track stars Sabra Harvey and . . .  himself. (He’s the top age-graded man, a well-deserved honor). But he goes out on a limb by naming (with sprinter input) the Fleetest male and female masters, naming W45 Renee Henderson and M50 Michael Waller. I concur in these picks but hate to overlook older sprinters. In any case, Pete merits congrats for his wonderful site and his most recent title — top M45 runner at club cross country nationals.

  1. and the winner of the award goes to..... - December 23, 2009

Age grading only works well within each individual age grouping. Seriously, if you are going to decide who is a better athlete comparing a 70 year old and a 40 year old…and you make up an arbitrary table to wholly base your comparison on, it is a flawed system. I know, I know…this is all just imaginary…I get it.
But it’s interesting to point out that the two people who put together the hypothetical awards given out on this particular site (Magill and Palmer)…both get an “athlete of the year” award. Wow, what a coincidence that was!

Happy Holidays to all- and a lump of coal to “and the winner of the award goes to….” – or perhaps a bag of wood pellets for your stove – or a log – for your fireplace – which would be more than the winners of Pete’s “contest” receive.

Magill asked people to send in suggestions for hypothetical “awards” these were supposed to be light-hearted and all in fun. If you were so anxious to be recognized, why didn’t you send in your name? Maybe petty complainer of the year award?
