Photos, videos of major masters meets explode on the Internets

I’ve posted a smattering of shots from Sacramento worlds (and still have hundreds in my to-do bin), but an explosion of great photography is percolating through the Internets elsewhere. (But not on the WMA website, of course.) See this USATF gallery of Berea nationals, for example. Check out this Flickr series on world champ high jumper John Dobroth (and others). Meanwhile, British speedster Tom Phillips is promising thousands of his own Sacramento shots at his own website. And UK’s Lesley Richardson may upload some at her Eurovets site. And finally, YouTube is crazy with videos from worlds. Here’s a general search of 2011 WMA clips. More added daily. Let me know of any other galleries out there — from any major meet. But if you can watch this 12-minute clueless clip without falling asleep, you’re a stud.

Ken, work in progress killed by Apple launching less than competent operating system upgrade a week back. Still trying to get back in there.

Meanwhile, link from left side of my home page at http://www.tomphillipsphotos.co.uk will go to page with loads of shots from Opening Ceremony through to Monday July 11. More this week, I promise.

And BTW Linda Carty’s huge outpouring of videos on YouTube is great! many thanks for that.

Yes, there are many photo galleries, that’s great, and YouTube is full of videos, but mainly of 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, 20K race walk, and discus and javelin throws from women’s weight pentathlon.
But I am interested in videos of long and triple jumps, esp. M45 and M50. The only jumps videos so far are of high jump: M50 (Bruce McBarnett), M55 (James Barrineu, Wille Banks), and W55.
So, I will be very grateful if someone posts videos from the long and triple jumps (M45, M50, W75, etc.).
Jumps are always neglected – why?
    Maybe the throws as well.

A bit confusing, all of this. The stated gallery of the Nationals in Berea is actually showing photos of a Track Club Meet, not of the Nationals… but the publisher was at the Nationals and took photos.

Oops, my bad, Stefan! Link to Berea gallery is now fixed. USATF has a day-by-day gallery of nationals.

Thanks for the update re the Berea gallery Stefan – I thought it looked a bit odd – but figured I was having a brain freeze.
Thanks to all who took so many photos.
The “official photographer” of the WMA meet is CssPhotoDesign.com – photos are under California State Games – or were the last time I looked. While a few of the older women’s 8k x-c look decent – and a few of the x-c awards ceremony, they seemed to have rather randomly picked parts of some events to snap – and others to just ignore – and some of the ones on the track seem to be at such a distance that it is hard to tell who is who.
Was there is a “official” photographer for the Nationals in Berea – I saw someone (other than competitors) taking photos of a few competitors – are they up somewhere?

    Ventsi,

The jumps and throws are not “always neglected” but there are times when officialdom can make it very hard to get access for photos, particularly for the throws.

In Sacramento, I never once got access to shoot the hammer competitions, for example. Officials would simply not let me (with an accredited media pass) in there. For the weight throw, I was asked to work from behind the “shelter” of a large tree. For the M50 long jump, I was prevented from shooting from the end of the pit, “in case an athlete ran through”.

I was shooting stills. There were very few accredited media people in Sacramento shooting video. That means that most of the track stuff on video that is being posted on YouTube etc was shot from the crowd. Any “crowd for the jumps was usually a long way distant, and for the throws, always the safe side of officials and fences.

Tom, please, don’t take it personally. Nobody blames you or anyone else. I am sure that in Sacramento you did your best to make photos everywhere where this was possible and to cover all the events.
Officials sometimes are right. Personally I am a long-jumper and know it can be distracting if a photographer stands or lies at the end of the sandpit. Sometimes some of us really “run through” and may “sweep” the guy to another location :-).
Yes, it seems that the only possibility to make a video of the horizontal jumps is from the “crowd”, i.e. far away from the event. But it is okay, no problem. It is interesting to see the approach run, take-off, and the technique of the best master jumpers (for example, for me it’s difficult to imagine how a 52-year old guy can jump 14 m in triple jump; you guessed I am talking about Wolfgang Knabe – he beats former Olympic champions and world record holders like Al Joyner and Wille Banks).
You see, I am not impartial, so I am disappointed to see online only few videos of horizontal jumps of masters – e.g. the long jump (slow motion) of Kent Nygren (SWE, winner M45 Lahti 2009), the triple jumps of Rez Cameron (UK, winner M45 Ljubljana 2008), Willie Banks (TJ, Donostia, 2005), and some jumps of Spanish masters from their national championships.
What about the fantastic M45 long jump competition in Sacramento? At least it’s good that Ken Stone posted some great photos of William Ayears, Sampson brothers, etc. But I miss the videos.
