How about Portland, Oregon, hosting WMA indoor worlds in 2019?
World Masters Athletics is seeking bidders for 2019 indoor worlds, saying: “Please note that bid applications for the … Indoor championship must be with the secretary by the 1st SEPTEMBER 2015. The bid application FORM, details of the Bidders Guidelines with the the main parts of the Contract may be found on the WMA website, (championships).” The 2017 indoor worlds are in Daegu City, South Korea. But the 2016 IAAF indoor worlds are in Portland, Oregon. So why not let the geezers run there as well? Get on it, USATF!

At this point, we don’t have a permanent indoor track unfortunately. The city of Portland has apparently sold the track that will be used for IAAF worlds to Iowa State, so we let it slip through our fingers so to speak. It’s a crime that Portland doesn’t have a permanent championship spec indoor track, especially considering how big track is here. I’ve worked a little bit on the issue and have done a feasibility study that shows to me a multi-use facility with a 200m indoor track could operate economically. An indoor track in Portland makes more sense than Eugene because of the much greater infrastructure and proximity to the airport. The problems are of course finding a place to put it and finding the money to build it.
We could hold all the championship meets on a more regular basis-Masters, NCAA’s, etc. I would be interested in hearing other people’s thoughts if they wanted to leave a comment.
In spite of the meet that Portland is having, really, the Pacific Northwest Masters group is in a bit of a mess. The regional coordinator, Rose Schlewitz, quit several years ago due to the health of her husband, in spite of what is listed on the masters USATF website, and in National Masters News. No one has picked up the position and it doesn’t look promising for the future. U of O is pretty much focused on Open and University meets.
