Prayers are with our masters friends down in Houston

Hurricane Ike means to interrupt the training of masters tracksters in the Houston area, according to the latest reports. The storm is expected to arrive Friday or Saturday. Those affacted include our own sprint demigod Bill Collins and his Houston Elite TC family, including Rick Riddle, Horace Grant, Ken Thomas and George Haywood. The Houston Masters Sports Association caters to some of our friends, too. Stay out of harm’s way, guys, and let us know when you’re all home safe.

I second Kettrell’s message and note that this is a really big storm and will also impact the training routines of athletes along a large segment of the Gulf Coast. Here in New Orleans I had planned a javelin throwing session today to help get ready for the Arkansas Senior Olympics next weekend. That’s out the window as the rain is coming down in sheets accompanied by 40-50 mph winds in gusts and we are 250 miles or so from the center of the storm. I’m sure my throwing friends over in Lafayette, Louisiana, Vince Breaux and Harold Landry, are also going to be rained out although knowing Vince he will go do about 20 sets of benchpresses at Red Lerille’s gym instead.

I’m 180 miles northeast of Houston area and we’re bracing ourselves as well..Big trees here in East Texas make winds hazardous.
Houston/Galveston, brace yourselves..this one will be ugly

I’m on the north side of Houston. My plan is to go out with my discus and PR.
Seriously though, we’re all concerned, and the community appears to be following the advice of the authorities very well.
The state senior games is coming up in a couple of weeks though, so this isn’t helpful in preparations for that.

We have all been affected in some way by the storm here. I have gone through most of the big storms as a native Texan during my life time. However, this one has been quite devasting to our community. As most of you have seen on the news, this one has spread quite a bit of damage over a wide area. I had some damage to my home, lost all the trees in my yard, one missing my bedroom by about ten feet, and just heard today that my area is not expected to have electricity for a number of weeks. I can still communicate wirelessly, and I am fortunate to have a back-up generator to run a few hours a day. We are blessed not to have been physically injured and pray for those who have suffered worse. Thanks for all the concern and prayers.
