Proposals aims to ease, tighten rules on USATF masters records
USATF’s annual meeting will vote on more than 50 rules changes, including many with masters impact. At least four involve masters records. One I like: You need at least two entrants in an event (rather than the current three) to have an age-group mark ratified, but in field events all entrants across age groups count toward the minimum. One I don’t like: All members of a relay team have to be USATF members. This would be a rarity, of course, but I can see a day when four ninetysomethings gather at a Senior Olympics to challenge the Winston-Salem marks. I don’t know that Don Pellmann was a USATF member when he set five M100 world records at the 2015 San Diego Senior Games. A proposal by outgoing national masters chair Gary Snyder aims to make sure that when an individual or relay team scratches from the next round, the next ranked original non-qualifier shall be advanced. “This procedure shall be repeated until the subsequent round is full. … Rationale: The intent … is to have full heats/flights in subsequent rounds wherever possible, giving non-qualifying athletes another chance to compete should a qualifying athlete be unable to compete in the subsequent round. So if two qualifying athletes were unable to run the subsequent round, the next 2 best non-qualifiers could advance.” It’s a tweak of an existing rule, but helps clarify it.

The information provided on the following webpage:
http://www.usatfmasters.org/fa_recordguidelines.htm
(which basically says that the athlete is responsible for collecting and filling out all record application forms) appears to be in conflict with Regulation 23.B. Domestic Sanctions, which requires the following for a USATF sanctioned meet:
“2. Records: It has established that appropriate provision has been made for validation of any records established during the competition;”
and Rule 123.3: “Recorder of Records:
For all meets there shall be included in the list of officials a Recorder of Records. He/she shall see that records are properly applied for. He/she
shall have at the site of the competition an adequate supply of record forms. He/she
should have no other duties.”
Item 44 –…. Amend Rule 320.8 as
follows:
…
(c) National Championships are presumptively bona fide.
That would eliminate some issues.
There’s also a proposal for a 25-29 age group.
The 25-29 proposal is interesting, but unfortunately the recommended action is “rejection.”
It is about time that some sanity comes into the process. Please eliminate all rules that are unnecessary and that inhibit competition.
Just a clarification there are no rounds in telays, they are strictly finals-so the rule your talking about should only lynwood apply to individual events.
