Puerto Rico may get 2010 WMA regional championships by default

Canada’s Brian Keaveney, president of North and Central America and Caribbean World Masters Athletics, has announced that he’s just received a bid for his region’s WMA 2010 championships. Brian wrote Doug Smith of Ontario: “Mayagűez, Puerto Rico, which is on the west coast of the island, has just submitted an official bid to host this year’s track and field championships. It will be held Sept. 3, 4, 5, 6. This is a late bid as you know. A quick visit will be made to the site for an inspection.â€

The 2003 world meet was held in Carolina, on the island's northeast coast.

Brian continues:

A report will be given and a decision made ASAP as to the hosting. The Mayagüez Athletics Stadium is a 13,000 capacity stadium. It will host the athletics and soccer games of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. (the Games are an open competition in July). The stadium has a 400-meter track which complies with the parameters of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Brian also provided this link to tourism info.

Although the U.S. mainland was supposedly going to offer a bid, I haven’t heard of anything substantice. So Puerto Rico — site of the 2003 worlds — will probably get the meet. It’s late notice, but what the heck. At least it’s easy to get to. And it doesn’t conflict with other major events.

Here are shots of the track, provided by Doug Smith’s newsletter to 1,700 Canadian masters. So Canadians got the info before other North Americans. Hmmmm.

Thank you, Ken, for bringing us this news. Tony Echeandia, you were correct about this site — thank you. And Mellow Johnny, start looking for flights from Portland (Oregon) to Mayaguez. You have the international steeplechase of your dreams.

Unfortunately, I was hoping for the mainland to be hosting. Won’t be able to make it due to the costs (major budget cuts for teachers due to the economy so money will be tigher) and already have a full schedule that weekend (Labor Day). Perhaps next time.

I hope everyone who can make it comes, the facility is beautiful and Mayaguez is a great town! Homes might be easy to rent instead of hotels as well. Aguadilla & Rincon have rentals, both homes and condo’s. Anyone who has any questions about the track or area feel free to contact me.
