Pyramid 5K aims to benefit track at masters-friendly school

Everyone who’s competed at Long Beach State since 1995 knows the Pyramid — a dramatic blue-glass arena rising majestically north of the track. But the track itself has gone to seed, and folks running at Sunday’s Self-Transcendence meet noted its sorry shape. But thanks to the power of the Pyramid, a resurfaced track could be possible. M45 high jumper Tom VanZandt writes: “I am helping to put on the Pyramid Run at Long Beach State. See www.pyramidrun.com. This November 8 race will benefit the Long Beach State track and cross country teams. I think we all agree that the Beach has been a very strong
supporter of masters track and field over the years.” Indeed. It’s been the site of many Southern California Striders Meets of Champions and hundreds of all-comers meets open to masters. (And it was the scene of my first masters meet: Jan. 28, 1995.)

Tom continued:

Long Beach State has been very open to
individuals training there; its coaches have been very helpful to
masters, and it has been the site of numerous masters meets. The
program is definitely in need of more money. A new track stadium is in
the near-term plans of the Athletic Department. . . . В As a financial
supporter of the program, I do know that the need for additional operating revenue is acute. This event is one effort
toward meeting their needs.

I highly recommend this fund-raising effort. Spread the word!

What a nostalgic moment. Long Beach State track. I can’t believe that it’s the same I trained on in the ’60s and ’70s. We had open races around the campus. Ron Larrieu was still competing. I’d see Dwight Stones training on that field. One of Bob Richards’ sons would train there. He was a great pole vaulter like his Dad. My favorite workout? repeat 6 miles below 36 minutes(2 x 6 miles)with a 10 minute interval or less. I was in my 40s. Fond memories.

Yup Ken, the condition of the high jump pit and cover was a big topic of conversation Sunday.
When they were little, my kids always liked being taken to the track meets at the “Pyramid School.” It’s good to see something is being done to improve the venue. It’s long overdue for a makeover.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to participate, but I do wish the effort much success.
    Thanks for keeping us informed.
