Raschker’s latest honor: Geezerjock of the Year

Geezerjock magazine is now titled Masters Athlete, and the cover girl of its current issue is Phil Raschker. Track is now 2-for-3 in GeezerJocks of the Year (which will remain the award’s name). Bill Collins won in 2005, and a racquetball player won the honor in 2006. Allen Lessels wrote a nice profile of Phil, which quotes moi. Also notable were the runner-ups in GJOTY voting. Shot putter Glenn Thompson is the M40-49 GJOTY and record-setting runner Jeanne Daprano won W70-79 honors.

Perhaps as significant as winning GJOTY, Phil is shown hurdling in a full-page ad for OptiMSM, with the headline: “Thanks to OptiMSM, my aging joints are no longer the biggest hurdle.â€
A caption reads: “Bergstrom Nutrition, makers of OptiMSM and longtime sponsor of Phil, offers our congratulations to her as being honored as GeezerJock of the Year. Phil continues to be a role model for athletes of all ages.â€
I don’t think the BN sponsorship matches what Nike does for its athletes, but every little bit helps.
Congratulations to Phil, Glenn and Jeanne for their amazing years.

    I missed one.
The W80 GJOTY is another trackster: Helen Beauchamp of Memphis, Tennessee, who at 88 won five events at the National Senior Games and set a W85 national record in the weight throw.
    Helps to turn the page.
