Here’s the letter Anselm got from WMA Prez Stan Perkins
Dear Anselm LeBourne (USA)
Firstly, I must thank you and the other athletes that have applied to compete in this most momentous event, and the opportunity to show a new audience the power of Master athletics. The applications have been overwhelming with up to 60 men and women applying for selection. We are pleased that so many athletes were interested and took the time to submit their details.
For the events there were 9 men and 9 women selected, with provision made for two athletes from China and one reserve in each event in case of any possible withdrawals. The selection was based on the information submitted in the applications that had been received. These indicated the best performances of both 2014 and 2015, and whilst we realise that some athletes are just starting their season and may improve their performances, we had to abide by a cut off date to meet the requirements of the championship organisers in China. The details of the selected athletes are shown below.
For those athletes selected, WMA is offering athletes accommodation for 4 nights and a daily allowance US$50.00. (27-30 August) however at this time athletes should be prepared to meet their own travel and any further additional costs. All Master athletes will be accredited in the same manner as the IAAF athletes. This will entitle them to use the official training sites, admission to the championships competition including seating in the reserved athletes stands during the championships and attend all social functions the IAAF athletes are entitled to. Â Accompanying persons will be provided team official accreditations and at this time we understand this includes admission to the championships competition.
It is very important that we know details of the athletes and any accompanying persons as soon as possible, so I would be grateful that you let the WMA Secretary know of your acceptance of participation, the extent of your intended stay, accompanying person, with full details as on passports of all persons, as well as the passport number.
I look forward to seeing you in Beijing and possible Lyon and wish you a successful season.
Yours sincerely,
Stanley Perkins
WMA PRESIDENT
I’m assuming USATF will foot the travel bill. That’s the impression I got at the Anaheim convention. So wish our kids well. This should be fun!

I can’t think of two more deserving athletes to represent the USA in those events. Best of luck to you both, I have no doubt you will make all of us masters proud!
On the 800 list #5 is Mike Sherar (no “G”). Mike and Paul Osland (#6) are 2 fabulous coaches for us at UTTC Masters.
And congrats Anselm! You deserve it. What a year you’re having.
SUPER CONGRATS to RenĂ©e and Anselm – two very deserving and talented elite Masters athletes!!
Renee, you will do great in China. Just remember that day some years ago when Marcus Battle wanted you to run the 400. You didn’t think it was a good idea at the time. Then, you ran and ran great. You’ll be even better in Beijing.
Congratulations to both Renee and Anselm. I hope USATF will cover their airfare – that is an expensive trip.
How soon will they know?
Thank you very kindly to all of you for the compliments. Mary Harada you raised a fantastic point. Our airfare should be paid by the USATF and we should be given uniform kits just like all the other USA athletes. Masters management, please address these two issues for Renee and I, we are taking USA masters athletics to a new level. Thanks.
Anselm…you can win!!!
Congratulations to my friend Renee and to Anselm who keeps amazing us with all of these USA and World Records. I’m so excited I should get me a ticket just to go and cheer for Renee, I know for a fact she would hear me!
This is fantastic!!! I am so proud of both of you. Represent!
Congratulations Anselm, I ran against you 37 years ago as we dueled on the anchor leg of the PSAL Championship 4×8 in in 1978. Glad to see you are still running strong….good luck not only representing the USA masters but if I can remember our mutual Trinidadian roots.

A huge congratulations Renee on your selection, I too was hoping for a spot, unfortunately a ruptured Achilles prevented me to submit a time by the required deadline. You will be awesome in China, best wishes.
Marie Kay (Aus)
Thanks for all the well wishes!! Hope to do you all proud!!
Renee, you are one of my all-time favorites, but I’m sure you know that. With your insight into how to train I am sure you will peak at just the right time for the big event.
Good luck to you.

Congrats to you both!!
