Sacramento worlds time schedule now posted as PDF document
Time schedules are now posted on the WMA Sacramento website. See them here. The 17-page PDF document is searchable, but I hope the organizers find a way of conveying the information via a web page as well. Many other major masters meets allow you to go straight to an event or age group. The PDF is fine for folks with computer-savvy, but some will be forced to study every page to find their events.

Now I have seen every thing I feared at SAC – the older women W 55+ are down to run the 8k x-c as 10 Am – when it is hot as hades. Lovely lovely lovely – watch the old ladies pass out. The oldest men will not be finished running an 8k by 10 am.
Do they have a death wish for the older women – the older men are not being asked to run at 10 am – in fact the only group made to run at 10 am for the 8k x-c are women 55+
What are those fruitcakes thinking- they better have a fleet of ambulances ready to pick up the bodies.
Eeeeeek. 8 a.m. high jump means I’ll have to start warm up the night before.
Yup – they are crazy – my 5k – for women 75+ is scheduled for 10:15 – one section – I think there are all of 5 or 6 of us – maybe fewer since some of us are down for the 8k x-c two days earlier and may be done in by the heat of running the 8k x-c in heat. And they may be a bit shocked that some old ladies need more than 33 minutes to stagger around the track in the 90+ heat – or even 80+ heat.
What happened to the concept of oldest first – in the cool of the day -so as to not risk damage to one’s health for older athletes who do not have the ability to tolerate heat?
Yes, Mary, as I said earlier, it’s going to be pretty wild in Sacramento. The city has an unusual climate, at least for Easterners like me. I couldn’t believe how cool it was in the early morning, and it’s downright pleasant around 7 PM and later.
But in the middle of the day, watch out. The point is that this is like going to an expensive restaurant; presumably the chefs know how to fine-tune their preparations to the highest level to maximize the taste.
For Sacramento Worlds, given the mid-day heat, the chefs indeed had to do a lot of fine-tuning with the schedule, as you have seen. The question is, did they cut things too fine? Looks like you are right on the edge; only time will tell whether you will come out on the wrong side.
Historical note: My very first year in masters T&F I asked myself why the masters (Philadelphia Masters T&F Assoc for me) ran in hot, unshaded stadiums (in August) for their outdoor championships. I guess I still think about that from time to time. Good luck, Mary, in your races.
Just to add some data, if you look at the weather for Sacramento last July 10th (a random date when it was pretty hot), the temperature was 60F or below until 7 a.m.
63F at 8 a.m.
69F at 9 a.m.
73F at 10 a.m.
80F at 11 a.m.
then >80F until 8 p.m. with a high of 97F between 4 and 5 p.m. and back to 72F at 9 p.m. The max dewpoint was 61F, so it’s a fairly dry heat compared to most parts of the US in July. I can see it being a problem for some of the older athletes though.
Thanks, Scott. Maybe I should have said “given the heat in the afternoon, especially later on in the afternoon.”
I, also, looked at some data (Accuweather, in this case). I examined the 2010 reports for the period of July 1-20 to see how many days were really hot in that period (i.e., 96 or higher). Here is what I found (I concentrated, of course, on Sacramento and other places where we have had big meets):
Sacramento 9
Charlotte 5
Orlando 1
Spokane 0
Honolulu 0
Oshkosh 0
And yet, I would say that Sacramento’s climiate is far superior to that of Charlotte or Orlando. Again, it comes down to fine-tuning the schedule.
Sacramento:
63F at 8 a.m.
69F at 9 a.m.
73F at 10 a.m.
80F at 11 a.m.
Coming from Houston, it sound kind of chilly…
No matter how you make the schedule, somebody will complain 🙂
What about these venues ? any one know where “csus” is?
CSUS is California State University, Sacramento, “Sac State”. The main venue.
Sacto Folks:At least you have a sched.for July.Senior Games is next week and as of 10 minutes ago..NO SCHED.
Today in Houston it was 103 and then it rained hard for 20 minutes and the temp dropped to 74. As they say, if you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait a few minutes.
The mornings are not that bad, even on days it hits 100+. The evening sessions could be interesting, as this area normally hits peak temp in the 5-6 pm range.
This year has been uncommonly mild with temps -10 to 15 degrees from normal. Remember it’s very dry here. if you stay out of the sun prior to competition it will not sap you like any humid area would.
I’m in contact with Sacto organizers, hoping they will generate an easier-to-navigate time schedule. I suggested they emulate this one from Eurovets:

As the organizers have decided not to use the 24-hour clock and have not designated times as am or pm…
are we sure the W 55+ cross-country isn’t actually taking place at night ??? 🙂
@Simon, if you look at the schedule you’ll see it’s a 24 hour clock.
Sorry Simon maybe you didn’t look far enough. There are using a 24 clock, there are some races schedule from 1800 to 2100.
Oh thanks Robert, that’s good (?) news.
Sounds like we should limit WMA championships to Alaska, Scotland, Scandanavia, and Southern Chili. Sac is hot, no doubt, and I can hardly wait to die in the decathlon 1500. Temps have been very low this year as mentioned above, so, if open distances are at noon that is good relative to the M60 deca at 400pm (my guess), the hottest part of the day. Hey – Athens Olympics temps were hot as were LA. Perhaps we should have these meets after our nationals, and the open world’s. Or are we working schedules around football season? My frank opinion is WMA champs should be in early to mid Sept when temps fall off AND airfares are more reasonable. Right after 4th of July airfares are at a premium as that is peak family vacation time. No for my wish list – nacho bar at the high jump venue and valet parking by the finish of the 1500!
I like the 800 start times in the 40-44.
Good job with that. I’ll be very lucky to just make the final, but will gladly be a spectator if I don’t get past semi’s.
So what was the official count of participants —5,000+?
I don’t know, Matt. Apparently it’s a secret. At an absolute minimum they SHOULD have gotten 5500, but I doubt they did. As you recall, the last time the worlds were held in the US (Buffalo, 1995) they drew 5335.
Buffalo was at a big disadvantage compared to Sacramento, of course, because in those days the minimum age for men was 40. Had Buffalo been able to accept M35 candidates in running, racewalking, throwing, cross country, marathon, etc., they certainly could have gotten 5700.
Will be anxious to hear what the final number turns out to be for Sacramento.
I’ve already posted my disdain for the schedule on my Facebook page. I would GLADLY trade places – wait, no…event “time”…no distance running for me 🙂 – with a distance runner whose event is scheduled later in the day/afternoon when it’s warmer. How do they expect a jumper (my W40 TJ is scheduled for 8am) to be “explosive” at that time of the morning when their muscles can’t even warm up? Or maybe it’s just me! Sorry…I’ve been having a temper tantrum about this all day! I’ll get over it…LOL!!!
Però la finale dei 400mt correrli di mattina..non è piacevole per lo spettacolo!
Enrico:NO LO ENTIENDO,NI TAMPOCO SOY ITALIANO-POR FAVOR…INGLES O ESPANOL
I have a number of reasons for skipping WMA-Sacramento, but one major one was the refusal of WMA to disclose a meet schedule prior to the entry fee deadline. Perhaps if one entered only one event, it wouldn’t matter. But because of the hefty travel/room/board expenses for such a long meet entering both track and field events is common.
It was a shame to have to skip the Hayward Classic this year. But they did the same thing. No real schedule until after the due date for entry fees.
It is particularly insulting to have a “world” meet treat masters as if they were competing in an all-comers meet or 8th grade rally day. Pay up first, then we’ll tell you how many field events conflict with track events.
Masters track and field deserves better.
Agree with others that the delayed schedule publication is puzzling. The meet organizers aren’t rookies — Why hold back?!
WMA is late but National Sr Games is even later — they finally published a rudimentary schedule, barely a week before the meet starts!
Compare this disarray to masters swimming, which seems better organized — the national long course masters swim meet isn’t until August, but the order of events is already posted! of course, a swim meet is easier to run than a track meet, since every event occurs in the exact same tank of water, but still…..

Changing lanes for a second, where can I find the results of all Sac races?
Looked everywhere, but probably right under my nose…er mouse.
