Scholarship honors Robert Castillo, late masters 800 star

Robert Castillo was an exceptional M45 middle-distance runner. World class, in fact. But his accidental death in October prompted memories of his status as a world-class human being as well — with proof coming in the many heartfelt comments on my original blog post (including ones from his son and a nephew). Now it’s been announced that a college scholarship has been dedicated in his name and honor. We should all be so loved and admired.

Danielle Dorfman, a Miami runner and founder of the Running Friends Forever organization, said its annual college scholarship award for 2006 will be dedicated to Roberto Antonio Castillo, a 48-year-old elite runner who was killed by a motorist Oct. 23 while training in Miami-Dade County.
Castillo, who lived in Miami, was involved in the South Florida running and cycling scene for 20 years, most notably as a masters national track and field champion and masters cyclist.
He finished in the top five at the World Masters Track and Field Championships three times, including a second-place finish in the 800 meters at the 2003 event.
Castillo was killed when he was waiting for a group for a training ride in the Redlands and was hit by a motorist.
”Roberto embraced the spirit of Running Friends Forever, a kind and considerate elite runner who shared his enthusiasm and love for sport with all those who knew him,” said Dorfman, a junior at Gulliver Prep High School.
In his honor, one male and one female high school senior — who excel at running, scholastics and life and plan to run for a college team — each will receive $500.
Recipients will be selected by a panel of area running experts. Winners will be announced May 1.
Running Friends Forever Foundation’s fourth scholarship program has awarded more than $5,000 to candidates statewide…
