August 2010 update: Some of the links on this page are wrong, thanks to a recent software upgrade. My apologies. I’ll fix them when I can. — Ken (Scroll down for world and national masters age-group record links) In early 1996, when I first posted British stat guru Peter Matthews’ records for “veterans,” everything seemed […]

World Cuppin’? You’re invited to S. African masters nationals
Pam and Stan Immelman in South Africa send along this gracious note: “If any USA Masters are contemplating attending the World Cup (soccer tournament) in South Africa in June, they may wish to come a month earlier and participate at our nationals in Bellville, a suburb of Cape Town! Even though it will be approaching […]

Bernardine Portenski: the best runner you’ve never heard of
If Bernardine Portenski lived in New York, Boston or Los Angeles, she’d be a national hero. Instead, she lives in a place called Wellington on a remote island nation southeast of Australia — and barely rates a whisper in masters track. But she’s the real deal. Last month, when Bernie (as she calls herself) wrote […]

Colleen outlegs Rita for USATF Masters Athlete of the Year
No complaints this year. USATF honchos were smart in naming W45 roadie Colleen De Reuck as Masters Athlete of the Year, announced today at the annual meeting in Indianapolis. Unlike 2007’s debacle, when Phil Raschker was named world’s best masters athlete but lost the USATF prize to a W75 roadie, this year’s world’s best (Rita […]

Lahti silver medalist gets 2-year ban for doping violation
On October 23, Finnish media reported a doping violation at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Lahti. (I saw it for the first time tonight, sorry.) WMA and the Koops’ site in Germany now are reporting the punishment meted out. Here’s the brief WMA report on M45 Finnish shot putter Pekka Viippo, the silver-medal winner, being […]

2009 world rankings posted, revealing potential USA record
Martin Gasselsberger of Austria has posted his 2009 masters rankings — combining world indoor and outdoor season lists — at his ever-amazing site, mastersathletics.net. While skimming the lists, I noticed at least one potential American age-group record. It’s the W35 5000-meter run. The listed American record is 15:15.2 by Francie Larrieu back in 1988. But […]

He said, she said: Statmeisters clash over 15 world records
Record rift: Ivar Söderlind vs. Sandy Pashkin A month ago, we reported how W40 Lisa Valle of Albuquerque made SI’s Faces in the Crowd, noting her great effort earlier in August: “(She) set a world age-group record in the 2K steeple at Lahti worlds. She ran the race in 7:01.91, beating the listed record of 7:02.96 by Italy’s […]

Ed Whitlock’s latest stroll: Half-marathon in 1:37 at age 78
When they write Ed Whitlock’s obituary (in about 30 or 40 years), his sub-3-hour marathons in his 70s will be right up there in the headline. But here’s another superhuman mark: 1 hour, 37 minutes, 33.5 seconds for the half-marathon (13.1 miles). He did that yesterday, at age 78, at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon (which included […]

Introducing another major player: mastersathletics.info
Geoff Bramley of Brisbane, Australia, didn’t take baby steps when he conceived his marvelous masters Web site. He chose a domain name with grown-up ambitions: mastersathletics.info. Although the site launched last November, I wasn’t aware of it until he contacted me this month. And I immediately replied, calling his site “WONDERFUL!” And I sent some […]

W60 world record for 5000 held by three women at once?
Here’s a trivia question: Who holds the W60 world record for 5,000 meters? We’re talking the standard outdoor track 5K — none of this roadie nonsense. Easy, you say. Just saunter over to the WMA records page for women. Voila: It’s Marion Irvine, the legendary running nun from Northern California whose 19:14.8 mark turns 20 […]
