Sorensen calling it a season after two more meets
![]() |
Jim Sorensen’s Bloomington mile today and an 800 on Saturday will likely be his last races of the season, he writes. His Indy experience was still fresh (and wet) in mind, though, and he tells a story about apparently being misttaken for a coach. In reply to a question about how meet management treated him, Jim wrote: “Everything was fine, though I was told politely that the athlete tent area was for coaches only. Do I look that old?”

Here’s a quickie Q&A with Jim (which I conducted before seeing the video of leading from the gun):
Masterstrack.com: How did your race develop — any lead changes?
Jim: I led wire-to-wire, passing in 65-2:10-3:15. Mr. Hinton fell back off the pace early, but then held or closed the distance until the final lap.
What were your lap splits?
65, 64, 64, 5-high, with the tenths it ended up at 4:13.21.
What were the weather conditions during your race?
It rained or drizzled that morning and during the warm-ups some. The race was dry, but the track was puddled and there was a decent wind on the home stretch
Given the conditions, were you satisfied with your time?
No, but when things are not the best, intentions and motivations flucuate.
How did meet management treat you? How did the crowd respond to your race? Tell me about your stay in Indy. Mix with any of the open/elites? Any stories to tell?
No stories, but it was great to see so many old faces and meet new people. It was fun to watch and see some of the Oregon TC guys and girls I used to be teammates with on the Farm Team. I also enjoyed watching the 800 and 1500 races. I am so glad I was able to run the masters mile; it provided for a great few days of track and field spectating, I would certainly do it again.
What are your competition plans the rest of the summer?
The 27th and 30th was going to be an 800 and then a 1500, but now that the mile is run; as you know, I will do the mile on Wednesday (today) and an 800 on Saturday, then fly home and probably call it a season.
