Sorensen on American record mile: ‘like pulling a piano’

CSTV.com has posted a great video (click on “1 mile in record time”), showing Jim Sorensen’s M40 mile record yesterday at Bloomington, Indiana. Brett Hess of College Sports TV called the race (with Indiana Invaders coach Matt Ebersole) and interviewed Jim and prep star Matt Centrowitz afterward. Track was wet after an earlier rainstorm, but temps had dropped from 86 to 71, Brett said. After running 4:05.27, Jim said he felt “pretty sluggish out there, like pulling a piano. Getting tired a little at the end of the season. I couldn’t get out as quick as I wanted. But I knew I had something left because having the incentive of the American record was pretty good motivation.”

Asked what he thought of the 17-year-old Centrowitz, who finished a couple seconds ahead of him, Jim said, graciously: “Oh wow. He has such a bright future ahead of him. . . . If he sticks with it — and runs till age 40 — he can do some great things.”
Jim noted that his mile PR at age 17 was 4:29.
But while Matt will go down as one of the best American prep distance runners in history, Jim has solidified his status as the No. 1 M40 miler in the United States.
Kudos to the rabbits in the race — Dustin Emrani and Hunter Spencer.
Special thanks to CSTV.com for posting the video, and the Indiana Invaders for putting on the meet for our mile stars.
On to Saturday’s meet — where Jim is entered in an 800-meter race with a field of 16! Our hope: The first sub-1:50 outdoors by a 40-year-old. The listed WR is 1:50.69 by Ireland’s Colm Rothery in 2000. Jim ran 1:51.57 last May.

Thanks for posting all this info. Nice to get so much detail as to what went on with the M40 mile record breaker’s accomplishment.
Never would have known he broke the ran much less broke the record if it wasn’t for this web site.

Ken why does EVERY effort by Jim have to be all about “records”?? Do you realise this is putting undue and clearly not needed PRESSURE on him?? He just told you he is getting tired (he is HUMAN dear Ken)and your hope is for a sub 1.50 800 tomorrow…..hmmmmm. So i guess if a man at 40 runs ONLY say 1.55 or even 1.56 thats not very good? Give Jim a break…records are BEST spoken about AFTER they are BROKEN. Talking about them before is just that..talk. Jim Sorenson will be “defined” by more than records…thats my feeling.
