Sorensen vs. Centrowitz in sub-4 quest Wednesday

It’s a Dream Mile for a new generation. Tomorrow in Bloomington, Indiana, our 40-year-old mile star Jim Sorensen will seek an M40 world record (and perhaps the first sub-4 outdoors) at an American Milers Club High Performance Series race. And a wonderful story is developing, since the Status of Entries page shows high school star Matt Centrowitz as an entrant. (Click on “Men’s Mile“) This young vs. old duel was fantasized on the Track & Field News Message Board back before the Prefontaine Classic. Neither was invited. But they’re both in shape, and should the pace be adequate, history could be in the making!

The mile entrants (so far) at Indiana University’s Billy Hayes Track:

1 Daniel Wilson n/a 3:59
2 Thomas Morgan ZAP Fitness / Reebok 4:00.68
3 Brendan O’Keefe ZAP Fitness / Reebok 4:00.99
4 Jim Sorensen Sports Basement / Sports Basement 4:01.86
5 Joseph B Eby Team Good River / Brooks 4:02.30
6 Matthew Centrowitz unattached / n/a 4:03.40
7 Thomas Frazer Athletic Annex 3.45

Age before beauty? Jim Sorensen, old enough to be Matt Centrowitz’s father, will race the mile prodigy tomorrow.

Give me a break … this will be a joke … winner may go 4:03 … there will be no sub-4 out of this group

    Colorado, you suck!
I hope all these guys will be running the sub-4 instead of racing for the win. I know, I always wanted to win, but I am hoping that they’ll all work WITH each other to get as many under 4 as possible. Including the old man and kid.

Why would you call this event a “joke”? Centro Jr is an exciting prodigy-and progeny-and we’ve never had a sub-4 masters outdoor success. Why not hope for fireworks?

Colorado, you like to post your own replies? Do you anwser back when you talk to yourself to? I hope they break 4:00 but it will probably be the same stuff…go for the win and end up with slower times.

I hear the n/a track club is nasty. Watch out!

Well, over on T&FN’s boards, it was said that Wilson was a pacesetter in the Reebok GP in NY helping with pacing Centro. He is in this race, so I THINK he will probably be doing pacing again…at least to get the race MOVING.

It must be the shoes ! I can see the Nike ad now – if they both accomplish the improbable.
All they really need are proper fractions , and good racing luck. They are both “lionhearted”.
Sometimes you race for the collective , greater good. TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More.

i went to a similar outting at mt. sac for AJ acosta. They were trying to set it up so a bunch of locals could come out and try to break 4. I think the winner was 4:01 and Acosta came in second in 4:03. The problem was that the pace wasn’t honest. too many guys wanted to break 4 so no one wanted to do the work. I think they went through 800 in 2:03 or something like that. If someone wants to do the work for the first half, then i see no reason why atleast one person wont break 4
