Spaniard shatters John Hinton’s M45 WR for 1500 meters

America doesn’t have a monopoly on milers. Today we learn that M45 star Jesus Borrego of Spain has bettered John Hinton’s M45 world record for 1500 meters, clocking 3:52.43 on July 12, according to a note that Jesus sent to Nolan Shaheed of California. This Spanish blog also confirms the mark. The listed M45 WR is 3:56.39, which John ran at Durham, North Carolina, in 2007. Jesus isn’t new to record-breaking. In February 2007, we reported his WR for the indoor 3000.

Jesus’ 3:52.43 is roughly equivalent to a 4:11 mile — better than Tony Young’s 4:16.09 WR of earlier this year.
Here’s a rough Google translation of the blog entry:

Jesus Borrego again returns to put the veteran Spanish athletics at the top of the global landscape thanks to a new world record. It was during the championship held in Andalusia absolute Cordoba on July 12 and in his evidence talisman of 1.500m. A few days after meeting the 47 years he has been able to run in the not inconsiderable record of 3:52.43. The previous plusmarca of 3:56.39 was held by American John Hinton since May 6 last year in Durham. Jesus already held the record for Europe with 3:56.58. Some 45 steps “in the first 300, then go for completing each 400 meters in 1.02 and 1.02-1.03 have led to the mark in his own words that could still improve. Our congratulations of the entire athletics veteran.

Jesus was the M40 gold medalist at San Sebastian worlds in 2005:

I wonder what his younger days were like, PR’s, etc.

Records are made to be broken! Nice mark.
His stride length & lift are quite impressive. Great time!

Faster and Faster! I love it. This must be close to a 4:10 mile
Assuming a 40 year old is capable of a 4:00 mile, it is comprehensible for a 50 year old to run 4:12
    What does the future hold?

According to Ken’s previous post, Borrego started running at age 19. Borrego cites frequent injuries as the reason for not reaching his potential as an open athlete. In his thirties, he focused instead on duathlon and biking.
As a masters runner, he has been successful at steeple and cross as well. He is sponsored by a local cycling team, who has posted his masters running resume here.
The masters area of the web site of RFEA (Spain’s governing body of track & field) shows recent articles about Spanish masters in the news and solicits news tips from readers. Sound familiar? 🙂
