Teague takes Reebok masters mile; Lagat sets 5K record
Somewhat off the beaten track of exhibitions, the masters mile at today’s Reebok Boston Indoor Games was still a doozy. Results are here. Chris Teague held off Ray Puglsey, 4:29.05 to 4:29.43 as a dozen men dipped under 4:40 at the site of the indoor masters nationals next month. USATF reports that Chris “waited until the last lap to take the lead of the men’s masters mile run and held on for the victory.” Larry Eder also blogged the race, posted here. In other masters news, M35 Bernard Lagat set an American open record two hours later in the 5000 with a sterling run described here. His time of 13:11.50 would probably be an M35 world record, but WMA and USATF don’t list the indoor 5K. The listed outdoor M35 American record is 13:26.03 by Steve Plasencia in 1993. The outdoor M35 WR is 13:07.40 by Germany’s Dieter Baumann in 2002.
Here is Larry Eder’s running account of the masters mile at Reebok:
Fifteen runners in the field, hitting 400 meters in 67.6, 800 meters in 2:14, another 67 for 400 meters! Lemme, Burdgett, Simpson, Livingstone, Pugsley in fifth. 1200 meters hit in 3:23. Pugsley moving up into second, looking good, very relaxed on Lemme’s shoulder. Chris Teague takes off, with Pugsley in second, Chris Teague wins in 4:29.05, with Ray Pugsley, former training partner of one Rich Kenah, in second in 4:29.43! Chris Simpson in third in 4:30.56, Sean Livingstone in fourth in 4:31.99! What a race, Chris Teague made a great move over the last 200 meters and took the race!

Congratulations to the runners on what sounds like a great race. I’m excited to hear that my local 40+ hero, Ray is running master’s track. I hope it is the first of many for him.
Yes, and Ray, a former standout at Dartmouth College, would look great at Boston and Sacramento this year. This must indeed be Ray Pugsley and not Ray Puglsey as in this blog.
Now that race sounded entertaining!! The crowd must have loved it.
I just watched it on ESPN2 – great race – they showed all of it (I was amazed at that)with little stupid announcer chatter – and Lagat made it look easy. I know it was not easy – but he has such great form and strength – wow.
Congrats to my little brother, Sean Livingston (not Livingstone, as reported)for his 4th place finish in such a great masters race! Welcome to the world of masters….now start making plans for nationals!
