UK’s Anthony Whiteman, 43, burns season best 1:48.81 for 800

Anthony has good reason to rest.

Sub-4 man Anthony Whiteman shouldn’t be so hard on himself. After taking third in a British Milers Club 800 on Saturday, he tweeted: “Bit flat today, should have toughed it out down the straight as Elliott & Sam were running strong races! Still don’t like Oxford track!” His time was 1:48.81. Not bad at age 43. A week earlier, he ran a hard 400 and asked: “Wonder if 50.27 is an age 43 World Best for 400m!? And to think I was labeled as having no speed as a youngster!” Pete Mundle’s last single-age records booklet in 2006 listed a 48.4 at age 43 for Roger Hagues of France, so no record, Tony. But nice speed!

The BMC posted about Anthony’s 800: “The 21-year-old St Mary’s University student tracked Sam Ellis, a fellow member of Birchfield Harriers, down the back straight after they had been taken around to 400m in 52.27secs. The pair both looked comfortable but must have been aware that the lurking presence of Anthony Whiteman was just behind waiting to pounce if they faltered. But there was no denying the Birchfield boys as Elliot [Giles] hit the front in the final 200m to clinch victory from Ellison, who was rewarded with 1:48.20 with Whiteman running a season’s best of 1:48.81.”

The No. 2 M40 man may be South Afica’s Shaun Abrahams, back in 1:57.42, according to mastersrankings.com.

Saw his tweet and looked up a 48.6 or so on Masters all time rankings for age 43. Didn’t see the 48.4. Good to know.
I’m sure Whiteman could go sub 50. He has great strength though of 800
