Update on Carter Holmes: He’s hoping to make Florida
In late February, I shared the story about M55 multi-eventer Carter Holmes and his heart scare at the University of Minnesota. Yesterday I got a note from longtime masters jumper Tom Langenfeld with a status report on Carter. It’s very encouraging. Tom writes: ” I talked to Carter last week. He’s been home for a little over a month now following rehab at the Sister Kenney Institute in Minneapolis. Says he’s frustrated by the slowness of his recovery, but I understand that he’s done much, much better than the medics expected. Says his problems are more like those of a stroke victim — speech, balance and short-term memory problems.”
Tom continued:
He’s using a walker right now. Docs aren’t yet sure about the extent of neurological damage. Not sure how long his heart was stopped. Sounds like he’s going to have angioplasty with stent placement within the next couple of weeks.
Carter is an artist, but his hands aren’t yet steady enough for him to return to that. His sense of humor seems in good shape, however, as is his competitive spirit. The main thing he wanted to know from me (other than how I was doing) was date and location of the 2009 national outdoor championships. His goal is to compete there.
Carter is really quite a remarkable guy.
Indeed. Godspeed, Carter. See U in Clermont!

Ken, it looks like he is aiming for the 2009 outdoor championships, which are in Clermont, Florida. Would be absolutely incredible for Carter to be ready for Spokane this August. On the other hand, Carter has a great deal of drive and determination. All best to you, Carter.
While I’ve never had the pleasure of competing with Carter, my prayers are with him during his recovery. I hope we can line up together, whether it be in Clermont or future national events.
Yikes! My original headline said Carter was shooting for Spokane. My bad. I’ve corrected it to Florida, with Clermont on second reference. Thanks for the reminders.

All the best to Carter and for a good and quick recovery. I know that multi-events are hard on the body, but hopefully not that hard. It would be great to see Carter at the 2010 Indoor Worlds Pent at Kamloops, B.C.
