USATF again disses masters throwers: Results still secret

Haven’t we seen this movie?  USATF holds a masters throws championship and takes days (or weeks) to post results. If this were a distance championship, athletes would be demanding someone’s head on a platter. But masters throwers are used to this treatment, I guess. All I know about last weekend’s meet — featuring the throws pentathlon and ultraweight/superweight pentathlon at the Concordia Throw Center in Portland, Oregon — comes from a masters mole: “Mark Landa (35-39 age group) set 4 American Records this past weekend at the Champs in Portland, Oregon! Throws Pentathlon – 35lb Weight – 56lb Weight – Ultraweight Penthlon. Hopefully results will be posted soon on usatf site.” But nyet. No results at the meet’s home page. No excuses, Indy. Post the dang results!

I take full responsiblity as meet director for this lateness. I hired a professional to run the computer. She did a great job at the meet. I’m am working to get the results from her.
When you blame USATF, you blame your volunteers and that is me, not Indianapolis. They did a great job helping me throughout the process.
We are trying to do the best we can.
    I apologize for this disappointment.
    George

George and all his volunteers and officials did a fine job all weekend. I enjoyed my first national meet experience there and my thanks to all there in Portland that made this happen.

Photos, that’s what I want to see. “You did what?” comes up a lot. Hard to explain the ultraweight to people.
George, great job. You must have set a record for number of throws per acre for a weekend. I hope Mac invites us back after seeing what the ultras did to his lawn.

George and his volunteers ALWAYS run a top notch meet and I hear this meet was exceptionally run; all athletes I have heard from REALLY appreciated the meet personnel and the facility. Let’s give due credit to that first. George never fails to send results. I too am anxious to see the full results especially because I was not able to attend an event I love but it is much more important that the meet was available to many athletes due to the tremendous efforts from George, USATF officials and volunteers. Thank you George and team!

Thanks George!! Was a really great run meet and a lot of fun!! Would be great to have the meet here in futute comps! I know all the other throwers in our group (30-49) were very impressed and had a great time!

In typical fashion, George deflected the heat from USATF to himself for the delayed meet results. What he didn’t say is that he took Monday (day after the meet) to visit an old friend in Portland area who has colon cancer; visit Ken Weinbel in Seattle who is now in an assisted living center (to present him with a duplicate trophy of the Ken Weinbel Award to the Outstanding Athlete in the Ultraweight Pentathlon); unload all the equipment from Seattle Masters AC; then, drive all the way across the State of Washington to Hayden Lake, ID.
    Sure you can appreciate that.
George has always carried a big load on his shoulders. This was best evidenced by USATF Masters Throws Chair, Jerry Bookin-Weiner, presenting him with a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his fellow throwers. Even though George placed third in the Throws Pentathlon in WMA World Champs meet in Lahti plus bronze in hammer and weight; he did not compete in the meet and was totally focused on making a great experience for everyone else.
Being on the LOC I’m biased, but having been to lots of national champs meets……this was very well run with an abundance of officials and volunteers, incredible venue, and meet hotel with a great rate and shuttle to the venue.
Thanks for all you do, Ken,to be an effective advocate for all of us at Master Track.com.

I’ve just seen results are available.(except Ultraweight Pentathlon. It will be available soon)
But why aren’t there detailed results for the pentathlon? It may be interesting!

George you have no blame to place – Remember when we had to wait for the NMN for results?

  9. Cindy Lea Arbelbide - August 26, 2009

As Fabio noted partial results are posted! The Throwing Pentathlon totals – but not the breakdown of individual marks/points per each of the five events. Hopefully this detail is coming.
For excitement – look at the W60-64 Throwing Pentathlon results between Myrle Mensey and Mary Hartzer. As there was no standing American Record in this age range event it would appear that Myrle achieves this honor by 4 points – 4462 to Mary’s 4458.
This has been a classic matchup for many seasons. Last year at the North American Championships it was Mary. And if you look at the National T&F results and the recent Senior Games Myrle was putting up the numbers. But the determination of Mary is not to be ignored and on Aug 22 she was closing fast. Might they meet again at the Norm Bowers Weight Pentathlon in September?
The Superweight results are also up.
Looks like the Ultra Pentathlon is still to go. Again a plug to include both the individual marks/points for each athlete as well as the final points tally.
    Congratulations to all the throwers!

This was a great meet and a great time! Having Mac Wilkins walking around like a proud papa (and he has every right to feel this way! The facility is the better than you can imagine) was great and getting the chance to meet him at this type of event is……..priceless!
My first National Throws Meet and I hope not my last.
Chicago next year. Could, and should, be a great turnout.
Thanks George for all the hard work.

Congratulations to George Mathews and all the volunteers at last weekend’s Masters Throws Championships! The meet was run very efficiently and professionally. This was my first national throws pentathlon and I very much enjoyed competing with the faces whose names I’ve been reading for years. The throws pentathlon went very smoothly and was right on schedule. The only complaint I would have is the knucklehead throwers who when not competing walk behind the discus, weight and hammer rings during your throws. Of all people, they should know better. I had a great time and can’t wait for Concordia and the great Mac Wilkins to host it again! Thank you!
