Magill runs Anaheim 5K and Portland masters mile same day?

Dave Clingan shared link to YouTube video of the masters mile at his Portland Track festival race Saturday, won by Tim Gore. Unsure whether he’s related to Al. But the biggest untold story of the race was Pete Magill running two races the same day, almost 1,000 miles apart. We’ve learned that Pete on Saturday morning won his age group in the Downtown Anaheim 5K in 15:01.24. See results here. Then he flies to Oregon for the mile? I want to see confirmation from him on how this was possible.

Ken – How did I do it? … Well, if you watch the video, I think the answer would be, “Not very well!” LOL! Truth is I promised Dave Clingan months ago that he could 100% count on me to toe the line for his Masters Mile. But then it took me far longer to get fit again following fall injuries than I’d anticipated, so I was left with very limited opportunities to go after my main goal: a sub-15 5K on the roads, which no one has ever done at 50+ (the WR is 15:00). The last good 5K in So Cal until September happened to fall on the same day as the mile. Dave gave me th go-ahead to do the 5K and then just fun-run the mile, so that’s what I did.

My legs felt great Saturday AM, and I had my best race of the spring. Unfortunately, I came up two seconds shy of a new WR.

Interestingly, that would become a theme for the day. Not only did I miss by 2 seconds, but Mike Blackmore missed the M50-54 WR in the mile by 2 seconds. And Nolan Shaheed likewise came up 2 seconds shy of a new M60-64 WR in the mile.

    So it goes.

Here’s the important thing: I think I had more fun taking 12th in that mile than I have had running a race in years. Dave knows how to put on a race, and it’s simply the greatest hanging with my masters’ peers.

    Thanks for asking – Pete

Pete’s a maniac — the good kind. I very much respect the fact that he honored his commitment to Dave Clingan even though he had a race in Anaheim that morning.

Pete averaged 4:50 miles in his 5K that morning, so think what he could have done if fresh that night! You are a BEAST, Mr. Magill!
