Video shows Nadine O’Connor going ‘WR’ 10-6 in practice

Of course, practice doesn’t count. But it’s amazing to watch someone 67 years old vault this high.  Pete Magill — crossing the line again because he’s supposed to be blogging about distance runners, not jumpers — linked to a YouTube video shot Monday by Bud Held at his and Nadine O’Connor’s undisclosed backyard location. Pete wrote: “Okay, this is just fantastic … out-of-this-world … unbelievable … choose your own superlative.”  I guess Pete was impressed. (And isn’t it cool when nonjumpers support the springy people?) Read his post here. The video lasts only 7 seconds, and Bud says: “10-6.” Then Nadine clears, and he says, “How about that!” Indeed.

Here’s another way to appreciate Nadine’s marks. Over in Germany, Annette and Robert Koop headlined a “W40-Rekord: Christina fliegt zuhause über 3,30m.”

Dr. Christina Ziemann, born in 1968, jumped 10-10, a German national age-group record. That’s only four inches higher than Nadine’s 10-6. And Christina is 26 or 27 years younger!

I had at times wanted a Long Jump pit in my backyard when I was in my 30’s and had a yard long enough. There’s still hope some day. It doesn’t have to be as long now since my approach is shorter by 15 feet. (laugh)

I know Ken’s just giving me a hard time, but for the record, the You Tube account I linked to was my own – since Nadine and Bud filmed this especially for my blog. I’d emailed Nadine that I wanted to show her in action, and I would have posted the film no matter what height Nadine cleared. Just turned out to be 10’6″!

On June 5, Nadine jumped at another Friday Night Vaults meet at San Diego State University. Despite having to wait two hours after her warmups to vault, she cleared 3.17 (10-4 3/4), thus raising her own W65 world record for the third time this year.
