W40 Alisa Harvey smashes American indoor record for 800

After turning 40 in mid-September, it was only a matter of time for Alisa Harvey to start making waves in her new age group. Last night at the MAC Holiday Classic at New York’s Armory track, Alisa led from start to finish and smashed Rose Monday’s W40 American record at 800 meters by 5 seconds. So reports race-witness Frank Morton, who joins a growing stable of blog correspondents.

Alisa clocked 2:10.7, Morton says. Monday held the listed record of 2:16.01, clocked at age 41 in March 2001. The listed W40 world record is 2:01.59 by the untouchable Russian, Yekaterina Podkopayeva, in February 1994.
Alisa was a 1986 NCAA champion at 1500 for Tennessee and won a Pan American Games gold in the 1500 in 1991. She also competed in the world indoor championships. She took a break in 1994, when she gave birth to her daughter Virginia, but came back strong in 1996 to take sixth in the Olympic Trials 800.
