W50 Patty Blanchard burns indoor WR for the 800
Patty Blanchard, a 50-year-old French teacher, paid her $5 (Canadian) entry fee yesterday at the Universite de Moncton in New Brunswick and got her money’s worth — a reported 2:25.02 world indoor record for the 800 meters. (The listed W50 world indoor record is 2:25.28 by Great Britain’s Caroline Marler in 2001.) Patty recorded the mark at the Dash through the Snow indoor meet. She’s a distance legend in her parts for competing in recent years on the collegiate level in Canada. At Orono nationals last summer, she won the W45 1500 and 5000 and took second in the 800.
Coach Steve LeBlanc of Athletics Canada passed the word to world-class sprinter (and blogger) Jimson Lee, who shared this note with me:
Here’s a last minute result in 2007 for you masters athletics fans out there.
Today in Moncton NB, masters runner Patty Blanchard (W50) ran an excellent 800m in 2:25.02 while competing at the first annual “Dash Through the Snow” meet hosted at the Universite de Moncton. Way to go Patty!
Patty is no stranger to records, especially indoors. She set a then-WR 5:08.6 mile in 2003. Nice run, Patty. Go for sub-2:20!
BTW, here’s my shot of Patty (in all black) taking second to Lorraine Jasper in the Orono 800.
