Why should throwers have all the pentathlon fun?

Over the years, a masters-inspired event has become big-time popular: the weight pentathlon. It’s even been added to the WMA world championships. Out in Hawaii, M60 multi-eventer Jack Karbens is trying to light a fire under the dashfolk version of the event. Called the sprint pentathlon, it consists of these metric races: 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400 — all in one day, with 15 to 25 minutes between races. Whew! A brutal workout if nothing else.

Jack reports the results of a modest four-person competition held last month:
Colleagues:
On Nov. 27, 2005 the Hawaii Masters Track Club hosted a Sprint Pentathlon at Kaiser High School in Honolulu. We need help in scoring this event. We do not know if age adjusted scoring is available for the 60 meter and 300 meter events. We have not seen the new age factor tables which we hear were approved at the recent USATF National Meeting. This event was inspired by events held in prior years by Graeme Shirley in San Diego and Gary Krainik in Chicago.
Here are the results. Please send us any suggestions on how to score. It was a hot, humid day. Wind was not a factor. We took 15 to 25 minutes between events. The events were staged in the following order: 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400. Times were hand timed; therefore, none of these performances are submitted for record or ranking purposes.
Any recommendations for staging future sprint or run pentathlons are welcome.
60 meters 100 200 300 400
Women:
Britta Staub 53 11.8 18.5 37.9 1:00.2 1:23.5

Men:
Jack Karbens 64 9.3 14.8 31.4 49.4 1:14.0
9/12/41
Allen Ng 57 9.4 14.7 31.1 49.0 1:27.4
12/1/47
Phillip Oyape 46 8.2 12.8 26.5 46.0 1:07.5
Only four takers for this event. Maybe more next time.

Me again: Many members of the masterstf Yahoo Group will recognize the name Gerry Krainik, since he founded that mailing list back in January 1999, when it was under the egroups brand name. Gerry can’t help but be a pioneer, I guess.

Hey- how about middle distance runners – why not a pentathalon for us too! Lemme see -500, 800, 1000, 1500(or mile) and a 3k or some such combination. 30 min between events – any takers? When I was younger (much much younger) I use to double at one day masters meets – 1500 and 5k outdoors, mile and 3k indoors. I have tried the 800 and mile (or 1500) also at meets – this is not particularly uncommon for some of us, so just stick in three more events and see who is still upright at the end. I am not sure I really want to try this – but outdoors on a cool and cloudy day – maybe –

A sprint pentathlon sounds interesting. Philly Masters has offered a distance pentathlon (200-400-800-mile-3000) in the past and may offer it again this year. We typically ran the runners pentathlon concurrently with the weight pentathlon. A sprint pentathlon could be intermixed with a distance pentahlon or they could be run separately.

How about a high-jump pentathlon? Each competitor must clear at least one height with each of the classic techniques: scissors, eastern cutoff, western roll, straddle, and flop. Highest mark with each technique counts toward the jumper’s total score.
