Winston-Salem to host 2014 outdoor nats; Boston gets indoors

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, beat Tulsa in a run-off to land the 2014 USATF National Masters Outdoor Championships, according to sources in St. Louis at the USATF annual meeting. “Outdoors it was a tie between Tulsa and Winston-Salem,” said my source. “Winston-Salem won on a close tie-breaker vote. Tulsa had an excellent presentation and had a well-thought-out plan. Definitely should be high on our future list of championship sites.” Wake Forest University will hold the meet — at Kentner Stadium. This is the first meet in the South since the heat-and-lightning-plagued 2006 masters nationals in Charlotte — about 90 minutes southwest of Winston-Salem. Indoor masters nationals return to Boston in 2014 for the first time since 2010.

It will be great to run in my hometown of Winston-Salem in 2014. I ran my first all comers at Wake Forest some 35 years ago. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my 50th than going home and running in front of my family and friends. Way to go Wake Forest!

Tell me, just interest, the long throws are done outside the stadium, is that normal overthere?

    Weia,

Unfortunately it is becoming more and more common here. One reason is that an increasing number of fields inside the track have field turf rather than grass and the long throws basically cannot be contested on field turf. The last time we had any long throws inside the stadium was in Spokane in 2008.

Ken, this will be only the 4th time in the modern era that masters outdoor nationals will be in the South. The first 3 all had a bit of notoriety:

Orlando 1999 Very hot, poor attendance, a lot of complaints about Disney. Excellent facilty, however.

Baton Rouge 2001 Had a split schedule (morning + early afternoon, then evening) because of predicted heat and humidity. Weather turned out to be not too bad, however. Miserable attendance and great facility.

Charlotte 2006 Highest attendance ever for a masters outdoors not in California or Oregon. Terrible problems with heat, probably our most dangerous meet ever in terms of risks faced by the athletes.

Winston-Salem 2014 I think this meet will have very good attendance. I understand that there will be a split schedule to avoid the afternoon heat, which is an excellent idea. Let’s see what happens, but I think this will be an excellent meet.

Thanks Noel. A bit disappointing as my 70th birthday is 8/1/14.

I feel you partner! I placed 4th in the M50 Decathlon at Worlds in Sacramento and turned 55 on August 21.

    Hey Noel,
I was trying to slow down so you could get 3rd. Looking forward to seeing you there Noel. Happy Holidays and hope family is healthy.

I’d like to be there for the championships. Where will the meet be held in Boston? Where is the facility? What hotels are nearby?
