WMA puts two Linz medalists on suspended list

Two shot putters — one M55 and one M40 — tested positive for steroids at the Linz world masters indoor meet in March, WMA President Cesare Beccalli confirmed today. The athletes — M55 silver medalist Neil Griffin of Britain and M40 silver medalist Andrew Fedyashin of Russia “have been provisionally suspended, pending the outcome of hearings,” Beccalli wrote. “In addition it is being announced that the current results listing for shot put M40 competition (at Linz) is under investigation and consequently the published/announced results for the event cannot be regarded as final.”

News of the suspensions was sent to me and also posted on the WMA Web site after I and others began making inquiries.
The German masters magazine Seniorenleichtathletik put the issue in play by reporting in its current issue that two athletes had been refused entry at the European masters outdoor championships two weeks from now in Poland.
The athletes weren’t identified until today. But in February, the Koops of Germany reported that an unnamed British athlete had tested positive at San Sebastian in summer 2005. It’s unclear whether that Briton was Griffin.
Griffin has been around for decades, and was ranked third in the world in the discus in 1998 behind Americans Tom Fahey and Lad Pataki. In 2002, Griffin was ranked second in the world in the M50 weight pentathlon. He took second in the M50 shot at the 2001 Brisbane world masters championships.
Fedyashin also won silver in the shot and javelin and bronze in the discus at the 2005 San Sebastian masters world outdoor meet.

IF more testing is done MORE Masters athletes will be identified as “cheaters”. Testing is expensive so they tend to “slip by.”Also just like the “old days” they do not want to test SOME athletes as the results whould prove disasterous…ie: “bad for track and field” ha ha ha ha ha!!! We athletes who run/throw/jump CLEAN are the winners…

When open athletes are caught using performance-enhancing drugs, I get very angry. They’re stealing glory, fame, and money from deserving athletes.
When masters athletes are caught, I feel really sad for them. What on earth are they thinking? What are they after? Is “winning” so important at this stage of our lives? Honestly, they seem to have completely missed the boat when it comes to what masters competition is all about. It’s about each of us challenging our own limits. It’s about fierce competition followed by equally passionate camaradery. It’s about striving to win, and then shrugging off defeat – because it’s really just about getting out there with our peers and continuing to participate in a sport we love.
It’s about the sport and the people, not about the wins.
Jeez, talk about being a “loser” in our sport!

I have thrown against Neil Griffin many times in the discus. He beat me at Gateshead with a PR of over 10 feet, but I beat him at Brisbane and San Sebastian. He is a power thrower who lands in position and arms the discus. He is a great competitor but a poor discus technician. He benefited from steroids because he is a muscle thrower. I think it hurt him as a discus thrower because he substituted power for technique. The shot requires more strength and power (which is why I don’t throw it), so steroids definitely help in that event. I enjoyed throwing against him and am sorry for his troubles.
We have lost some great throwers in the past two years: Griffin (Britain, steroids), Gordon (Britain, cancer), (Ledikie (Germany, steroids), and Pataki (USA, retired from sport). I am going to miss those guys. Training is fun, but I love the competition. Now, somethings missing.
Unfortunately, I have been throwing poorly this year because of illness (sleep apnea, collapsed lung from falling from a horse, and pneumonia). I’m feeling better and hope to be competitive in South Carolina. Las Vegas odds favor Tim Muller and Tino Martinez (5-1 odds), but the odds are dropping. Right now, I would be a good show bet.
