World record relay attempt boasted for Boise
Generally, national championships are “above” the promotional tactic of touting record attempts. (Such hype is generally reserved for big invitational meets in Europe, for example.) But there it is in the USATF news release on the Boise masters indoor nationals: “Relays: Will be WORLD RECORD attempts; Noteworthy will include 50+ 4×800 meters (Steve Gallegos, Nolan Shaheed, James Robinson, Dave Clingan).”
The current listed M50-59 indoor 4×8 relay world record is 8:55.30 (by Americans Nolan-Lapp-Sepkowski-Reinhart) on 3/4/2001. That’s an average of 2:13.8 — relatively soft. Gallegos, Shaheed, Robinson and Clingan could easily average 2:04 for a final time of 8:16.
But I’ll hedge my bets and predict an 8:20 final time. That still crushes the current WR by 35 seconds.
The relay team’s motto should be: “No soft records!”
Best of luck to the half-century types and all the other relayists at Boise.
