World records set in heptathlon, shot, sprint heats at Porto Alegre

Karla indoors a few years ago.

Oct. 18 results from Porto Alegre show world records in the 100, shot put and heptathlon — all by women. Most amazing is the 13.30 for Canada’s Karla Del Grande in the W60 100 — crushing the listed WR of 13.75 by Germany’s Ingrid Meier in 2008. Karla won her semifinal race. In the prelims, W55 Marie Mathieu clocked 13.24 to beat the listed WR of 13.30 by Phil Raschker in 2002. Britain’s Evaun Williams put the 2-kilogram shot 11.10 meters (36-5) to smash the listed W75 WR of 10.71 (35-1 3/4) by Germany’s Anne Chatrin in 2012. And in the W70 heptathlon, gold medalist Marianne Maier and silver medalist R. Jonkers-Slegers both broke the listed WR of 5362 by Germany’s Erika Sauer at 2011 Sacramento worlds. Marianne scored an incredible 6260 points. But don’t take these as official yet. NWI (no wind indicated) in some marks can mean the wind gauge failed.

Amazing time by W60 standout Karla Del Grande. Let’s see, she ran 13.30 in the 100, while the American W40 record is 12.31, co-held by Renee “The Jet” Henderson and Phil Raschker. Yes, I said the W40 record, but Karla is in W60. Yikes.

Good to see Evaun Williams break the W75 shot record. Evaun used to do both the 100 and the throws, but no more.

Unfortunately, the “NWI” for Karla says to me that she will not get the record.

I’m (secretly) glad I am ‘over the wall’ at 64 ! Karla would have left me standing ! I think I barely ran those times in my early 50’s !

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, I will stick to getting a PB before turning 65 in May !

Go Karla, Go, show them the 60’s are not for sissies!

How can world records be set when the facilities are clearly lacking in so many ways?

Looks like 3 Golds as of October 19 for Phil Rascher. And Joy Upshaw won the W50 100 meters. Good going.
